Williamstown, MA – The Williams College Ephs played host to wrestlers from seven programs from New England and New York, along with a few unattached competitors, today in Lasell Gymnasium for the Williams Open. It was a good day for the home squad which picked up a pair of first, second, and third place finishes, with three of these podiums coming courtesy of first years.
Seniors
David Yeh and
Jack Murphy set the tone, each reaching the final bout for their respective weight classes. At 125, Yeh narrowly fell short of the top spot as Isaic Paulino of Springfield was able to pick up a 4-3 victory. Up at 165, Murphy took the top spot as his competitor Sean Monteiro of Western New England was disqualified.
Following the lead of their exceptional seniors, first years
Peter Kane,
Max Hall, and
Wyatt Moyer all earned top-three finishes. Kane, at 157, delivered a dominant performance, winning all four of his matches, the first two by pins, and the last two by 8-0 major decisions. Up at 174,
Max Hall rebounded exceptionally well after dropping his second bout of the day, stringing together three consecutive victories en route to the third-place match. In his final bout of the day, he secured third with a nail-biting 9-7 decision over Jolan Martori of Springfield Tech. Like Hall, Moyer had to work his way through the consolation bracket to the third-place match after losing in the heavyweight quarterfinal. After dishing out two pins and taking a win by medical forfeit, Moyer finished the job with a thrilling win over Nick Rogers of Springfield by 3-2 decision.
Also earning a podium place was junior
William Smith, who after receiving a first-round bye came out on top of a tightly contested, back and forth affair with an 8-6 win by decision in the quarterfinal. Following this big win, Smith pinned his semifinal opponent in 2:35 to book a place in the championship bout. Unfortunately, unattached wrestler Nate Taylor came out firing and was able to prevail in the 184 final.
The Ephs will look to build on this positive momentum when they are back in action on Friday at the Budd Whitehall Duals hosted by Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA.
