Williamstown, MA – On a beautiful night under the lights, the Williams College Ephs (4-1) hosted the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Engineers (4-5). The Ephs would score early and often, never conceding the lead as they would go on to win 13-6.
The Ephs came out firing as they looked to extend their winning streak to three. It would take just one minute for
Ryan Johnson to open the scoring and three minutes for
Pearse Glavin to double the lead. RPI would scratch one back, but
Jesse Shapiro would add another goal for the white-hot Ephs' man-up unit to make it 3-1.
Williams would continue rolling into the second quarter as they looked to take complete control of the game.
Matthew Freitas and the defensive crew remained solid, with Freitas picking up 4 saves in the frame and only conceding in a man-down situation. Offensively, the Ephs would add cushion to their lead.
Calvin Caputo would open the scoring in the frame off a feed from
Ryan Johnson before he would pick up one of his own. A few minutes later, Caputo threw a behind-the-back pass from X which found
Jesse Shapiro open in the middle. The sophomore would rip home his 10
th goal of the season to extend the lead to four.
After tallying another man-up goal, RPI began to mount a comeback in the third frame. A minute later they would pull within two of the Ephs, however,
Calvin Caputo would answer back with two of his own. RPI would score again to cut the lead to three, but their charge had been stifled.
Following a late third-quarter penalty, RPI entered the final quarter a man down. After some concise passing, Caputo would find
Pearse Glavin who buried the chance. Shapiro would score minutes later to extend the lead to five goals. RPI would waste no time in answering back, but the Ephs remained poised. Caputo would add to his stellar performance today by adding two more goals in under a minute to bring his game total to five. Just for good measure, he would finish his (double) hat trick with a little over a minute remaining in the contest.
Coach McCormack commented on the emphatic win saying, "That was a hard-fought win against a strong team. Cal had a really productive night and set the tone for our offense, who delivered".
The Ephs will hit the road this weekend to face Connecticut College at 1 PM on Saturday in New London, Connecticut.
