WILLIAMSPORT, PA – Following tough matches against some of the best competition in Division III yesterday, the Ephs prepared for another round of duals at Lamade Gymnasium. On the second day of the Budd Whitehill Duals Tournament, each team is sorted into a bracket corresponding to their performance the day before. The Ephs found themselves facing off against York College and Oswego State University. While the Ephs ultimately fell to these strong opponents, it was another day of hefty competition where they displayed spirit, togetherness, and some noteworthy individual performances.
To start the day off, Williams tested themselves against York College. The Ephs were fighting an uphill battle due to their two vacant weight classes at 125 and 133. Tylor Stubbs, at 141, placed the first points on the board for Williams with a hard-fought victory by an 11-7 decision. He scored a crucial takedown in the second period to solidify his advantage and see out the win. Max Hall also stood out in his match against York with a swift victory by fall in a contest that only lasted 1 minute and 29 seconds. At 197, David LaPrade built upon his impressive performances against Cortland State on Friday by securing a 13-8 victory by decision. While LaPrade always seemed to have the edge, his bout remained close until a dominant third-period performance, where a late takedown cemented his lead.
To conclude their efforts at the Budd Whitehill Duals Tournament, the Ephs went head-to-head against Oswego State University. At 141, Tylor Stubbs earned his second win of the day by a 9-7 decision leaving him with three wins in his last three bouts of the tournament. During Stubbs' match, he took charge with a successful leg shot leading to a takedown and an impressive reversal to reestablish his control later on. Henry Forte, William Smith, and Dante Gutbrod won their bouts as well. Forte scored a takedown early in the second period followed by a near fall, eventually resulting in a pin 3 minutes and 26 seconds in. Gutbrod displayed yet another convincing performance against Oswego State. Just seconds into his match, he scored a takedown that proved decisive as he went on to win the match by a 6-3 decision. Gutbrod demonstrated his knack for keeping his opponents off the scoreboard by ceding only 3 points across all his matches this Friday and Saturday.
As the Ephs return to Williamstown, we look ahead to next Sunday, January 21, where Williams will partake in the NEWA Duals. This is a perfect opportunity for the Ephs to bounce back from difficult results this week and show the quality within this promising team.
