Ephs Down WPI 70-53 on the Road

WORCESTER, MASS. – It took the Ephs (7-6) almost the entire first half to find their groove, but once they established a lead they never looked back and posted a 70-53 win over WPI (7-5) on the road.
 
WPI opened up an early 7-2 lead, but the Ephs' junior guard Cortland McBarron scored two consecutive buckets on a jumper and a layup assisted by junior forward Anna Gerig to narrow the score to 7-6. WPI responded with a brief surge of seven consecutive points, but the Ephs kept battling back.
 
Sophomore forward Sarah Batra's buzzer beater to end the first quarter assisted by junior guard Kate Keenan left the Eps down 3, 19-16.
 
A Cortland McBarron three brought the Ephs to a within one, 21-20 at 8:34 of the second quarter, however WPI answered with an 11-point run keyed by Adrianna Niles who had a steal and two baskets.
 
First Year forward Tatum Leuenberger cut the deficit to nine with a jumper and WPI led 31-22.
 
First Year guard Hanorah Murphy's three pointer assisted by Kate Keenan brought the Ephs to within 6, 33-27. That hoop was followed by a Tatum Leuenberger jumper assisted by Arianna Gerig and the WPI lead was now down to 5, 33-28.
 
Honarah Murphy hit another three off a pass from Arianna Gerig to bring the Ephs within two, 33—31.
 
Gerig then set up Kate Keenan for a three to cap a 14-2 run by the Ephs and the Ephs now led by one, 34-33 and they would not surrender the lead .
 
The Eph lead grew to five after two consecutive hoops from Arianna Gerig, 38-33, and capped a 16-2 run by the Ephs to give Williams a five-point lead at the half.
 
Cortland McBarron led the Ephs with 11 points, while WPI was led by Adrianna Niles who scored 12 points.
 
The Ephs hit 5 of 10 three-point attempts and out rebounded the host Engineers 21-12.
 
First Year forward Mairi Smith scored the first two baskets for the Ephs in the second half and Williams led 42-35 at 7:33 of the third quarter. A Megan Stone jumper brought WPI within 3 at 42-39.
 
Ellie Tounkara nailed a three off a pass from sophomore guard Logan Coster to bring the Ephs back to a 6-point lead, 45-39. A jumper by Tatum Leuenberger put the Ephs up 47-39.
 
A WPI turnover at 4:02 of the third quarter forced the Engineers to take a timeout.
 
Cortland McBarron hit one of two free throws to boost the Ephs lead to 48-39.
 
A jump shot by WPI's Emmy Allen was answered by the Ephs Logan Coster to restore the 9-point lead, 50-41. Logan Coster hit one of 2 free throws to put Williams up 10, 51-41.
 
On her next trip to the free throw line Logan Coster drained both shots and the Eph lead was now 11, 53-42 with 2:23 left in the quarter.
 
Two jumpers by Cortland McBarron and a layup by Arianna Geirg gave the Ephs a 59-42 lead. A late basket by WPI's Emmy Allen brought he score to 59-44 at the end of three quarters.
 
With 5:02 left Cortland McBarron hit two free throws to give her 21 points on the night and the Ephs a 64-48 lead.
 
A Sarah Batra jumper and two free throws by Arianna Gerig boosted the Eph lead to 17, 68-51 with 3:37 left.
 
Junior captain Ellie Tounkara drove for a layup with 40 seconds to go for the final points in the game cementing the 70-53 win for the Ephs.
 
Eph head coach Pat Manning noted, "We really needed that game very badly heading into conference play. I thought Cortland McBarron was great defensively and offensively. Sarah Batra's three at the end of the first quarter was huge. Our bench played great and gave us 23 points. They worked hard this week. Tatum Leuenberger and Logan Coster gained a lot of confidence."
 
Manning added, "I was also happy to see we out rebounded WPI 37-25.
 
Next up for the Ephs is an away NESCAC encounter with arch rival Amherst College on Friday night in Amherst at 7 PM.
