Middlebury, VT – An excellent defensive performance was enough for the Ephs to shut out Middlebury in a hard game. The Ephs will look to build on this defensive posture and get back to scoring goals in time for the NESCAC Tournament.
Margaret Huelin in goal for Williams in the first half was involved almost immediately. In the 4
th minute, she was down to her right side to save a low strike out for a corner kick. The next sequence saw a couple more shots for Middlebury but none good enough to trouble Huelin.
The biggest scare of the game came 12 minutes in. A shot from Middlebury slammed off of the crossbar, sending a message to the Ephs. Williams took that in stride and began to turn the game around.
From the 15
th to 19
th minutes, the Ephs pushed forward.
Lily Mark and
Brianna Wright both had shots saved by the goalkeeper as the game's first phase ended and the deadlock continued.
Around the 30
th minute, there were chances for both teams as a wave of subs started to change the game. Huelin made the last save of the half and of her afternoon in the 41
st minute. The second half came and the game stayed locked, with neither team able to find the opening goal.
Ana Bozzi-Mackay only had to make one save in the second half, all because the Ephs' backline did so well limiting good shots for Middlebury. Between the 70
th and 80
th minutes the game's intensity stepped up again. Great tackles and some fouls were on display as both teams pushed for the win.
The game ended in a draw. Both teams were very good on defense and in the midfield, preventing either team from having a good look at goal. The result guarantees a top 3 finish in the NESCAC regular season for the Ephs.
After the game, Eph head coach
Sarah Raymond commented, "So proud of the tough gritty performance from us today. Midd were very good and the hardest team we have faced this year and to go up there on a cold and windy day and come back with a result is huge. With that we have secured a home quarter final on Saturday, and we are excited to be back on Cole."
It's playoff time.
