Consistent Play Allows Williams to Sweep Bates

Williamstown, MA - Williams College (9-5, 2-3 NESCAC) outplayed their opponents to achieve a sweep over Bates College (7-6, 2-3 NESCAC) 3-0 in a decisive victory.

The Ephs and Bobcats opened up the match evenly, both trying to gain a footing after committing a few errors 5-5. Freshman outside Kate Lane achieved an open cross-court kill which began to generate some momentum for the Ephs, and then Annaliese Fricke doubled-down with a taper to build the lead. A few errors put the Ephs ahead 12-9, and an overhead kill gave them a confident lead that urged a Bobcats timeout. A block that was covered just short let Bates come up to a two-point deficit, and then a hard-fought rally in which the Ephs dug many short balls gave them another point to be up 17-14. A back-one tempo kill by Lilly Fox, followed by a double block directly downwards by Chi Obi, and finally a strong line shot by Kate Lane, all in a row, let the Ephs break 20 and forced another Bates timeout 20-14. Post-timeout, Morgan Daetz achieved a phenomenal one arm dig to assist Kate Lane. Led by Kami Israelski's strong float serves, Chi Obi achieved two kills and an ace gave Williams the lead 24-16. A final tool by Chi Obi gave Williams the first set 25-18.

The Ephs kicked off the next set strong taking an early 5-1 lead following four attack errors by the Bobcats. Bates came off their timeout to reassess their error-making and level the score 5-5, and then a prolonged rally ensued featuring a series of Eph digs and ending with a setter dump from the Bobcats. The Ephs found the strength to reclaim another confident lead: Kate Lane found an opening around the outside of the block to get a kill, Maya Thompson floated an ace, and another competitive serve gave Lilly Fox an overhead kill at the far left corner. After a close comeback by Bates, Kami Israelski had a momentum stopping ace, and Annaliese Fricke secured the lead with a strong overhead kill. At 17-12, Bates called a timeout which helped them gain little traction, but the Ephs disallowed any runs with accurate offensive play and a committed defense. An incredibly sharp kill, just behind the 10-foot line, by Keely Campuzano gave the Ephs their 22nd point, but the Bobcats were able to throw Williams off their footing and work their way up to 24-22. A final attacking error gave the Ephs their second set 25-22.

The Ephs met a much more desperate Bates in the third set, yet four kills in a row gave Williams a quick lead 4-1. After a 3-point run, the Bobcats were able to slowly catch up, but still didn't have a viable response to the Ephs attackers, who consistently hit around the block to sustain the lead. Chi Obi earned the Ephs 11th point with a heavy hit at the center of the court, and a 4 point run topped off with Lilly Fox achieving yet another powerful overhead kill finally pressured a Bates timeout 13-9, following a 4-point run. Another timeout was called by Bates as the Ephs slowly increased their lead through precise play at 17-11, and Bates achieved a strong double block to bring the battle back. A big rally gave the Ephs their 19th point in a closer game 19-16, but Williams were ultimately able to retain their comfortable 3-point cushion. Two attack errors, an ace by Morgan Daetz, and a strong block by Lilly Fox and Kate Lane, all in a row, allowed Williams to push to their 23rd point. After a kill by Bates, the Ephs surprisingly called a timeout to gather their energy and quickly finish the set. It took a total of three plays for the Ephs to win following Kami Israelski's ace to finish it 25-19.

Williams head coach Christi Kelsey commented on the win: "Today our team really responded well to bounce back after the match last night. We thought we played with a renewed focused and competitive consistency which was good to see especially from the start of the first set!

It was great to get a win for our seniors too on senior weekend and looking forward to more NESCAC play next week!"

The Ephs play Colby College next weekend at Waterville, Maine, October 11th 7:30 PM EST.
