Williamstown, Massachusetts – Williams will rue missed chances as they drew against a strong Southern Maine University side. In their second game of the weekend, the Ephs dominated, having 24 shots to the Huskies' seven.
Williams was productive in the first half.
Tori Huang shot wide in the 5
th minute in what was the start of a period of pressure from the Ephs.
Reece Willison and
Piper Dupies also took shots from defensive positions.
Hunter Stonebraker was excellent in goal for Southern Maine, making four important saves in the first half to deny Huang,
Kelly Beale, and
Emmy Chung. Neither team could find a goal in the first half.
Williams was on the front foot as the second half began. In the 50
th minute, they had a great chance to score through
Brianna Wright. Dupies drove down the line and whipped a low ball across the face of the goal. Wright was arriving at the back post, but couldn't get enough purchase on the ball to score.
Blakely Buckingham had a good chance ten minutes later, stepping into a cut back but firing over the crossbar.
Ansley Burns also had a chance, heading wide after reaching a high cross to the back post.
Tori Huang nearly repeated her trick for the fourth game running in the 80
th minute, as she won a header off a corner but her effort went just wide left.
It wasn't all attack, though, as the defense did a great job keeping the Huskies away. In the 81
st minute,
Ava Simunovic chased down a Southern Maine forward who looked like she was going places.
After the game, Coach
Sarah Raymond commented: "Obviously a day of missed chances. We competed in every moment and created a lot of chances around the goal. Defensively when we were called on we were composed and played tough so proud of that. We know we are capable of scoring multiple goals and will continue to build our confidence in that area."
Despite doing well, Williams couldn't find the winning goal and the game ended 0-0. The Ephs move on, playing Little Three rival Wesleyan away next Saturday.
