Williamstown, MA – This weekend, we celebrated 100 years of the Williams College wrestling program at the Ephs' home opener in the historic Lasell Gymnasium. The wrestling program has been an integral part of what makes Williams special, providing a space for students to commit to self-improvement, overcome adversity, and learn the value of teamwork. Given the program's profound impact on the Williams community, it is important to take a moment to appreciate its legacy. To mark this milestone, the Ephs squared off in another Quad dual, facing Cortland State, Roger Williams, and Utica University. The Ephs put on an impressive performance for the visiting alumni at Lasell, winning all three duals.
The action kicked off at noon with a dominant 44-7 victory over a strong Cortland State team. After the first two bouts at 125 and 133, Williams found themselves trailing 7-0. However,
Tylor Stubbs stepped up with a 7-3 decision, shifting the momentum back in the Ephs' favor. Stubbs controlled the match, scoring two take downs and limiting his opponent to just three escape points. From that point on, the Ephs were on fire, pinning the remaining seven Cortland wrestlers and taking a commanding lead.
Caleb Seyfried,
Peter Kane, and
Fisher Stites stunned the crowd, each winning their bouts in less than a minute. The Ephs displayed tremendous resilience and focus, turning the tide and securing a comfortable victory.
At 2 p.m., the Ephs regrouped to face Utica University.
Christopher Colon at 125 continued the team's strong performance with a commanding 5-0 win by decision. After a scoreless first round, Colon dominated in the second, scoring an escape point and a takedown. At 133, first-year
John Schneider fell to a tough opponent in Trevor Cortright, but
Tylor Stubbs responded with another win at 141. Seyfried and Kane kept their streaks alive, both pinning their opponents and adding 18 points to the Ephs' total. At 165,
Fisher Stites contributed another five points with a tech fall, while
Sean Tansey and
Thomas Goodwin wrapped up the meet with two additional pins.
To close out the day, the Ephs faced Roger Williams, securing a 32-12 win thanks to standout performances from Seyfried, Kane, and Stites. At 149, Seyfried took control early with a first-round take down, and his relentless effort overwhelmed his opponent, leading to a pin in just 1 minute and 40 seconds. Junior
Peter Kane followed with a dominant pin in just 50 seconds, further solidifying his reputation as a force to be reckoned with. At 165,
Fisher Stites earned a critical 10-6 victory, showing great intensity from the outset, securing a take down, and adding four near-fall points to ensure his win.
Reflecting on the Ephs' dominant performance and this historic event for the Williams wrestling program, head coach
Scott Honecker shared: "What a fantastic celebration of the sport in Williamstown this weekend! All of our guys showed up and put on an outstanding performance in front of the home crowd and a gym full of alumni who came back for the centennial. Now that this preamble of early dual meets has concluded, I'm excited to dig into the film and start preparing for the tournament stretch."
Looking ahead, be sure to tune in on Saturday, November 23, as the Ephs compete in the Doug Parker Tournament in Springfield, MA. There is much to look forward to, as the Williams wrestlers have already shown tremendous talent and resilience thus far!
