Volleyball Achieves Mammoth Win Over Amherst

Amherst, MA - The Ephs (12-10, 5-5 NESCAC) took down the Mammoths (11-10, 2-8 NESCAC) in a turnaround 3-1.

The rivaling teams opened off determined to win, hitting hard though also adapting to committing a few errors. After equal exchanges, a powerful block by Tatum Baker and Helen Qian gave the Ephs a 2-point lead 9-7, but Amherst caught them before they could get away, going back up with 3-kills. The set score stayed within a 1-point differential, until Sidra Wohlwend achieved two aces, and Annalise Fricke scored two consecutive kills to bring Williams to a four point run with some momentum, 17-15. The Ephs shortly after pressured the Mammoths' first timeout 20-17, and immediately after another timeout 22-19. Then the tables turned, as Amherst went on a five point run. Keely Campuzano put the Ephs one away from bringing the sets to two-point advantage, but they lost the first set 25-23.

Amherst had a strong start in the second set, opening up 8-3 after a 5-point run. Keely Campuzano delivered a kill followed by two aces to bring the Ephs back up and force an Amherst timeout. Then, after a series of neutral exchanges, Campuzano started a 6-point run with two kills, which culminated in a solo block by Helen Qian. Now up 19-16, Williams slowly kept climbing, and after yet another ace by Campuzano, the Mammoths finally called a timeout 22-18. A series of Amherst dominated exchanges ensued, but the Ephs got their chance to win 24-23. The Mammoths pulled off the tying point, and after a few points, it was Campuzano once more who finished the set with two back-to-back kills, 28-26.

The third set started normally but then abruptly changed pace in a surge of domination by the Ephs. 6 errors and 2 aces awarded the Ephs a comfortable lead 12-8, then Kami Israelski pulled off 2 aces to consolidate a 5 point run and force a timeout 17-9. Another big run in which Kate Lane achieved two out of the four established an 11-point lead, and just a few points after, the Ephs' consistency resulted in their second win 25-15.

A 5 point run early in the second set led the Mammoths to coerce a timeout. Williams struggled to make up for their deficit, but a small three point run seemed to have caught Amherst in stress as they called a timeout being up 11-7. Led by Campuzano's serve, the Ephs came right off the timeout with four points to total a seven point run and tie the set 11-11, where Chi Obi also achieved two kills in the middle. After a few exchanges, a solo block by Annalise Fricke on the outside awarded Williams their first lead in the set, 16-15. Another 3 point run was achieved ending with an ace by Kami Israelski, and the Mammoths were forced to call a desperate timeout. Several net neutral exchanges occurred, involving blocks by both teams, but after a final slip up where the Mammoths let the Ephs have their chance to win, Kate Lane finished off the game 25-19.

Eph head coach Christi Kelsey said "Another great, gritty win for our team today! Amherst played so tough especially on their senior day and we responded well to being pushed in each set. Across the board we had great energy and focus on court and our bench was so supportive and locked in too.

Was a great way for us to wrap up the regular season and head to NESCACs next week!"

The Ephs are done with their regular season and will play in the NESCAC Quarterfinals on November 9. Williams will face Tufts at 3PM on Sarturday, November 9 in Medford, Mass. in a NESCAC Quarterfinal match.
