Williams Falls to Tufts in Overtime, 1-0, in DIII National Semifinals

LEXINGTON, VA The Williams College Ephs (16-4) suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss to the Tufts Jumbos (18-2) in the NCAA Division III Field Hockey National Semifinals. Despite a valiant defensive effort, including standout goalkeeping by Ellie Smith, the Ephs were unable to overcome Tufts' relentless attack, concluding their 2024 season.

The opening quarter set the tone for a fierce and evenly matched contest. Tufts dominated possession early, earning two penalty corners and two shot opportunities within the first minute. However, Williams' defense held strong, neutralizing the Jumbos' offensive threats. The physicality of the game was evident, with both teams committing multiple fouls—14 for Williams and 13 for Tufts. The quarter ended in a stalemate at 0-0.

Williams ramped up their offensive efforts in the second quarter. At 17:43, Linda Bibeau earned a penalty corner, followed by a shot from Meaghan Boehm that was blocked by Tufts' defense. Both teams had additional chances, including a saved shot by Williams' Anna Miller at 28:30 and multiple attempts from Tufts' Andrea Delgiudice and Gabby Sousa that failed to find the net. Fouls continued to accumulate, with Williams committing 12 and Tufts 9. Despite the increased intensity, the half ended 0-0.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth battle with limited scoring opportunities. Williams managed one shot, with Claire Colvin missing wide at 31:51. Tufts responded with a penalty corner and a shot by Kylie Rosenquest, but Ellie Smith made a crucial save. The defensive resilience from both teams kept the score locked at 0-0 heading into the final quarter.

Tufts increased their offensive pressure in the fourth quarter, registering eight shots to Williams' three. Ellie Smith was a standout for the Ephs, making four critical saves to keep her team in the game. Williams had opportunities of their own, including shots by Kiki Higgins and Madeline Rowland, but Tufts' goalkeeper Lydia Eastburn denied their efforts. Despite intense action, regulation time ended with neither team finding the back of the net.

The game's only goal came in the 66th minute. Tufts' Lainie Pearson converted a penalty corner with an assist from Kylie Rosenquest, securing the Jumbos' victory at 66:44 and moving Tufts to finals.
