Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Ephs Top Chapman 6-3 in Anaheim

Anaheim, CA- The men's tennis team took their first spring break match against Chapman University, 6-3. Doubles was all Williams, as their 1 and 3 teams dominated with very comfortable wins. At number 2 doubles, Shawn Berdia and Leon Liu won 8-6, polishing off a 3-0 doubles lead.

In singles, sophomore Nicholas Chen made quick work of his opponent, winning 6-0 6-2, putting the Ephs one match away from victory. Berdia clinched the win, breaking down his opponent with a combination of relentless defense and brutal attacking. Liu was next to post a victory, putting the Ephs up 6-0 and securing  another straight forward win. At 4 and 5, Simon Volkema and Kush Anand lost tight first sets and their opponents carried that momentum to victory. At number 1, Matt Kandel lost the first set, but came back to win the second.

Both players agreed to play a full third set, and Kandel jumped out to a 2-0 lead. His opponent broke back for 2-2 and then capitalized on a few no-ad deuce points, eventually winning 6-3 in the third. Eph head coach Dan Greenberg said, "For our first match outdoors, we had a solid showing. Definitely lots to improve upon both tennis wise and competitively, but I am happy we were able to get the win today." The Ephs look to continue their undefeated start to the season against CalTech on Wednesday with a match starting at 10 AM PDT.
