The Short Story:
After going on an eight-game win streak and claiming two championships along the way, the Ephs fell to East Texas Baptist University in Game 1 of the NCAA Super-Regionals. ETBU, currently on a 19-game win streak and a perfect 21-0 home record, scored 2 runs in the 1st inning without a hit. They then capitalized on Williams' defensive lapses, breaking the game open with a 6-run 4th inning. The Ephs will be looking to bounce back in Game 2 tomorrow against ETBU's strong pitching and offense. The winner of the NCAA Super-Regional will advance to the National Championship, set to take place at Bell Park at Taylor Field in Marshall, Texas.
Coach's Take:
"We didn't play Williams Softball the way we know we can and need to, to compete. However, we're looking forward to tomorrow and getting back in it. We know we are a lot better than we showed today and are excited to play another day." - Head Coach Kris Herman
How it Happened
-
East Texas Baptist jumped out to an early lead against starter Sadie Leonard, scoring both runs without recording a hit, taking advantage of 4 walks issued by Leonard and a pair of wild pitches. Leonard was relieved by Elyse Chan with two outs in the inning. Williams trailed 0-2 after one inning despite not allowing a hit.
-
Leonard returned to the game in the bottom of the fourth inning after East Texas Baptist had extended their lead to 6-0. With runners on second and third and one out, a wild pitch allowed a run to score, making it 3-0. A subsequent walk loaded the bases. A fielding error allowed two more runners to score, and an RBI bunt single drove in another run, further widening the gap.
-
East Texas Baptist scored twice more in the bottom of the fourth inning when a batter hit a 2-RBI single to center field. Both runs were unearned after reaching on errors earlier in the inning.
