Ephs Bounce Back to Sweep Connecticut College

Williamstown, MA - In their second game of the weekend, Williams College (6-3, 1-1 NESCAC) swept the Connecticut College Camels (7-3, 0-2 NESCAC) 3-0.

In the first set, a block by Connecticut gave them a strong start and furthermore the momentum as they were able to hit around the block. A kill by Tatum Baker put the Ephs on the board, but the Camels kept up their offensive aggression. An error increased the Camel's lead and they kept piling up on their run to a 7-2 lead, causing Eph head coach Christi Kelsey to call for a time out. The Ephs immediately bounced back with a kill down-the-line by Kate Lane, inching towards their deficit, and then three lucky attack errors by Connecticut made the score even. An ace by Sidra Wohlwend gave Williams their first lead. Despite defensive errors earlier in the match the Ephs next forced a Connecticut time out. Williams' back row was phenomenal, with impressive digs by Sidra Wohlwend and Kate Lane after a long rally. Despite the rocky start, two incredibly powerful cross-court kills by Annaliese Fricke and a block gave the Ephs their first set victory.

In the second set, Connecticut gave up an attack error and an Eph kill put them down 2. The Camels' back row stepped up, not letting any ball touch, and two errors by the Ephs tied the game 3-3. The Camel's defense looked great, but they were committing attack errors which could potentially cost them the set. A contested call over whether the blocker touched the ball ruled that it was a Connecticut point, but the energy intensified and a rally went to Williams. The Ephs had a small run of three points and with their hard work on defense, the Camels were struggling to be consistent on offense, with multiple attack errors leading to lost points. Connecticut called time out down 14-8, and directly following there were four more attack errors by the Camels in a row. Three Williams errors broke up their run, bringing their lead to a still confident 18-11. A cross court kill by Keely Campuzano followed by a kill down the line by Maya Thompson prompted the second Connecticut time out. The Ephs finished the set confidently after another Connecticut error 25-15.

The third set started off strong for the Ephs, who were putting the Camel's defense to work. Connecticut came right back up and tied the set, and two errors put the Ephs behind. However then they hastily fought back as Tatum Baker got a kill, with two much-needed blocks, and a Camel attack error. The teams then began to exchange points, until an ace by Morgan Daetz gave the Ephs a notable lead, resulting in a Camel timeout with Williams leading 13-8. Connecticut couldn't seem to break through their deficit as the Ephs maintained their large lead, and a dig by Kami Israelski paired with a kill by Tatum Baker was a lethal combo for the Ephs. The Camels took their final time-out after the Ephs scored two more in a row, making the score 22-15. The Ephs finished the way they had been playing, with an aggressive performance, taking down the Camels in the final set, 25-18.

Eph head coach Christi Kelsey provided reflections on today's game following yesterday's loss: "Today was a good bounce back performance for our team! We made some adjustments from yesterday and we are really proud overall of our team's steady and consistent play this weekend. We had lots of people contribute in important ways for us and that is not only people in on court roles but our bench has such great supportive energy and focus as well which is huge for us.

Great first NESCAC win for us and looking forward to the week ahead!"

The Ephs will travel to Poughkeepsie, NY for their next match against Vassar College on Wednesday, September 25th 7:30 PM.
