Ephs Down Corsairs in 5 Sets

Williamstown, MA - Williams College (8-4, 1-2 NESCAC) beat UMass Dartmouth (11-3) 3-2 to break their 6 game win streak.

After their long game against Middlebury just 14-hours ago, the Ephs drew first blood. The Corsairs found the strength to achieve 3-kills in a row and take the lead, while Kate Lane got two kills in a row to tie the set. Both teams proceeded to exchange kills to bring the set up to 7-7. Williams pulled off a magnificent 4-point run showcasing their vast variety of options, including a 3-tempo kill by Maya Thompson and finishing off with a ridiculous dig from just above the ground by Kami Israelski that ended in a kill by Keely Campuzano, forcing their opponents to call a timeout. The Corsairs broke the run after a tip resulted in a shanked dig and later managed to get 3 consecutive points consisting of a kill, block, and an Eph attack error, tying the game at 12. In the Ephs fifteenth point, freshman setter Lilly Carstens set a very off-system ball from just under the net to give Helen Qian, in the middle, an open kill to take the lead. The Ephs then built a 3-point lead 19-16 as the Corsairs were not able to stop the Eph front row. UMass Dartmouth came off of their timeout with a strong block on the outside, but Obi Chi nullified their momentum with a sharp swipe off an overhead dig. Another block from UMass on the outside and an ace gave them a seemingly final chance at 21-19, but after a service error and kill off the top of the block by Keely Campuzano, the set was brought to a confident lead at 23-19. Kate Lane achieved one of the two final points with a block off of a tight ball. However, 4 Ephs errors gave UMass a tying chance at 24-23. Post-timeout the Ephs ran a quick middle set in the right corner of the net, and Helen Qian put it down cleanly for Williams to take the first set 26-24.

In the second set, UMass Dartmouth started playing with much more cohesiveness, especially  in the back row, taking the lead early in the set 5-3 after Williams committed 3 errors. They executed scrappier and more successful plays, beginning to tip tool off of the block to earn several points and find the holes in the Williams defense to either tip over or hit a soft shot. In the midst of Williams' uphill battle to gain up to their lead, Annaliese Fricke and Keely Campuzano found the open space on a few kills to nail down the ball, but the Corsairs ultimately won with overwhelming momentum, getting 7 kills to Williams 2 in the middle of the set, building an advantage 16-12 and forcing an Ephs timeout. In a contested call where there was a touch off the block, the Corsairs won the dispute to take their 20th point and instate a very confident 6-point lead. After an Ephs timeout, The Corsairs got their 21st point with a very scrappy play under the net. Williams built up a surge of momentum with a 5-point run to salvage a chance, with Helen Qian and Obi Chi each getting a kill and together a double-block, and Annaliese Fricke getting the last two kills with a direct shot on the line to force a Corsair timeout. Post-timeout saw the Ephs play with much more fluidity, keeping the ball in through a series of digs in the first rally, though it ended in a Corsair point. Obi Chi achieved a middle kill to bring the set 23-20, but a missed serve unfortunately let the Corsairs have a one-point game. After a roll shot by Annaliese Fricke and an ace by Morgan Daetz, UMass Dartmouth put down the final kill to take the set 25-22.

In the third set, the Ephs dialed up the aggression, so as not to let the Corsairs keep getting away with scrappy plays. Annaliese Fricke and Keely Campuzano swung much more aggressively to berate the UMass Dartmouth defense.two aces by Maya Thompson placed into the left corner gave the Ephs a 6-2 lead. After the next point saw a shutdown block by Helen Qian and Kate Lane, the Corsairs called their first timeout. The Corsairs found a 4-point run, consisting of two kills and two Ephs errors, to bring the set to a close 9-8. Annaliese Fricke ran a combination play around the middle blocker to hit a high set in the middle which stunned the court. Then Morgan Daetz got an ace to bring the set 13-9. In Williams' 16th point, a persistent rally ensued with the Ephs swinging overhead and the Corsairs digging left and right which ended in a pass that went out for the Ephs success. This point caused a second timeout for the Corsairs, who came back even more devastated as Kate Lane got two powerful open kills and made the score 19-13. With Sidra Wohlwend and Kami Israelski assisting at serve receive, Annaliese Fricke got the next two points for the Ephs with a powerful cross-court kill and another combination play in the middle. 4 kills and 3 errors let Corsairs come up to 23-20, and Williams called a timeout to stop their momentum. They retained their momentum post-timeout, getting two points off rather scrappy plays, but a powerful open kill by Keely Campuzano and final shot by Kate Lane gave Williams their second set 25-23.

The Corsairs took an early the lead in the fourth set following 5 attack errors and a kill, 6-2. Their back row was executing very well, picking up strong hits and delivering their own kills through or off of the Williams block. The Ephs called their first timeout after another kill and block made the score 8-2 to try and stop their momentum, but also generate a way to get back into their system. Kate Lane came off the timeout with a huge middle kill that was deflected completely off the dig. In the Ephs 14th point, senior libero Sidra Wohlwend got a brilliant kill by hitting the ball quickly over an unprepared defense. Annaliese Fricke finally brought up the score to a 1-point deficit with an explosive open kill, forcing a Corsair timeout 17-18. Maya Thompson came off the timeout to get a direct block on the middle to tie the set, but The Corsairs got the next two points after a kill and attack error. Annaliese Fricke shut down their momentum with a block on the opposite hitter, reasserting Williams commitment to finish the game, but the Corsairs once again, got two more points, including an overhead kill to force an Ephs timeout 22-19. Williams did not want the Corsairs to get to the dangerous 23rd point in such a deficit. In the midst of a double-block for the Ephs and a kill by Keely Campuzano brought the Ephs to 21, the Corsairs successfully put down the Ephs before any momentum could icould be established, finishing 25-21.

The Ephs have rarely gone to a fifth set in their season. Maya Thompson led the initiative with two middle kills and a nice float that put the Ephs up 3-1. These points acclimated to a four-point run after which the Corsairs called a timeout 5-1. The Corsairs fought their way back up and the set became equal at 9 points. The Ephs pulled away with a small lead and made the Corsairs call another timeout down two points 13-11. In the end, Keely Campuzano put the final kill away to give the Ephs the win 15-13.

Ephs head coach Christi Kelsey talked about the team's strength throughout the game: "I think a great word that describes the mindset of our team right now is resiliency. I am really proud of how we are working together in practices and throughout matches to keep figuring out how to get better and adjust no matter what situations we find ourselves in each week.

There is still an incredible amount of potential with this team and we are excited to see where we go next. I do want to say again just how proud we continue to be of what this crew is building together both on and off the court! This really is a very committed group to one another and that's going to serve us well overall as we continue to go forward!"

Williams will next play Tufts University Friday, October 4th 7:00 PM EST in Chandler Gymnasium on Senior Night.
