Williamsport, PA – The Budd Whitehill National Duals is a prestigious collegiate wrestling tournament held annually at Lycoming College. Named in honor of Budd Whitehill, a legendary wrestling coach at Lycoming, the tournament boasts a rich history of showcasing top NCAA Division III programs from across the country.
In this two-day affair, the Williams College wrestlers competed in three dual meets today against Washington & Lee, Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and Oswego State. The Ephs faced stiff competition, losing their first two duals but ending the day on a high note with a decisive win against Oswego State. Now, the team looks to rest and recover to put their best foot forward tomorrow.
To start the day, the Williams College wrestling squad grappled against Washington & Lee, a strong team with a 6-1 record heading into the tournament. Unfortunately, the Ephs fell to the Generals, but there were multiple impressive individual performances, including a hard-fought 10-8 decision victory for
Jack Napeloni at 133, along with decisive wins by
Peter Kane at 157 lbs and Jamie Evarts at 184 lbs.
Kane's match was a strategic battle. The bout began with a barrage of single-leg shots from his opponent, Colin Bridges, resulting in an early take down for Bridges. Kane quickly escaped, resetting himself to engage with his opponent. The remainder of the first period was a deadlock as both wrestlers grappled for superior positioning. In the closing moments of the round, Kane scored a crucial take down to gain the points advantage. From there, Kane led consistently, methodically building a five-point margin to secure victory.
The Ephs performed well in their third and final dual of the day. Williams dominated Oswego State, racking up 40 points while holding their opponents to just 9. This victory was highlighted by standout performances from
Caleb Seyfried and
Henry Forte. Seyfried secured an early take down in the first period and, shortly after, flipped his opponent onto his back to earn a pin in just under 2 minutes. Forte also sprang into action from the outset, overpowering his opponent for a commanding 16-0 technical fall victory.
Peter Kane also notched his third win of the day by registering an 8-3 victory over Tyler Rossini. Remaining undefeated amid such impressive competition is quite a remarkable feat.
After today's display, Eph head Coach
Scott Honecker reflected on the team's performance while urging his wrestlers to remain focused on what lies ahead. He said: "Some wins, some losses, but we really represented ourselves well with the way we competed [today]. The work is not done—we have two matches tomorrow, and the outcome of the weekend is in our hands."
Looking ahead, the Ephs have two more duals tomorrow, including one against Ohio Northern University. Stay tuned for tomorrow's recap, detailing the second half of the Ephs' outing at the Budd Whitehill National Duals.
