WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – In a back-and-forth battle on Sunday afternoon, the Williams men's soccer team drew a 3-3 game against Western Connecticut State in a non-conference matchup at Cole Field. The Ephs are now hold a 7-1-4 overall record.
The Ephs struck early, opening the scoring just four minutes into play when
Griffin Labonski delivered a precise pass into the box for
Andrew Coelho, who buried his first goal of the season into the top right corner.
The Wolves responded almost immediately, finding the back of the net less than 20 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams settled in after the early goals, with neither side able to break through over the next 40 minutes. Williams posted 10 shots with three on goal in the first half, while Western Connecticut State tallied nine shots, including two on goal.
Western Connecticut State took its first lead of the game in the 72
nd minute, converting off a corner kick to go up 2-1. The Ephs answered quickly, as
Luca Ruta's perfectly placed corner found the head of
Ben Brown five minutes later to tie the score at 2-2.
With 4:30 remaining, the Ephs reclaimed the lead when
Spencer Mix launched a well-placed throw-in that JJ Rehlemann headed in to make it 3-2. However, the Wolves answered once again, capitalizing on a corner kick three minutes later to end the game at 3-3.
Both teams matched each other closely in offensive stats, each totaling 21 shots, with Williams holding a slight advantage in shots on goal, 10-7.
Goalkeeper Kia Darrell, recorded four saves on the day for the Ephs.
Williams returns home on Saturday, Oct. 18, to host Keene State at 12:00 p.m., when the team will also celebrate Senior Day.
