WESTFIELD, Mass. - First-year
Maya Lloyd scored twice and sophomore
Elizabeth Stophel recorded one goal and one assist Tuesday evening for the No. 14-ranked Williams College women's soccer team during a 4-0 victory over Westfield State in non-conference action on Alumni Field.
"It was a great team effort tonight," said head coach
Sarah Raymond. "There were some excellent goals as well as attacking plays that did not result in a goal. I am really happy that our whole team was a part of that win and it is a nice confidence booster to put more than one in as we go into our last two conference games before the postseason."
The Ephs (8-2-3, 5-1-2 NESCAC) scored less than five minutes into both halves against the Owls (5-5-6, 4-0-2 MASCAC). Williams opened the scoring in the fifth minute, as Stophel made a run down the right side of the pitch and played a ball, which Lloyd redirected inside the 18-yard box into the bottom left corner of the net.
The visitors developed a two-goal advantage during the 50th minute, with senior captain
Paige Nelson sending a pass from the defensive side of the field onto the feet of Lloyd. The Lexington, Massachusetts, native eluded an Owls' defender in the attacking end, and then buried a shot into the right side of the net from just beyond the box.
"Due to some injuries, we had student-athletes playing in different positions tonight and they all acquitted themselves in good ways," said Raymond. "It is a testament to the talent on this team and if someone goes out, the next student-athlete steps right up and fills those shoes. This is a great group to work with and we hope we have many more weeks together."
During the 62nd minute, Stophel received a pass from junior
Kianna Porter and dribbled into the box, drawing a penalty. The Chattanooga, Tennessee, native stepped and buried the penalty kick from 12 yards out into the right side of the net.
Sophomore
Elle Long played a perfect through ball onto the feet of
Olivia Bevilacqua and the first year did the rest, burying a shot into the bottom right corner, giving Williams a 4-0 lead with 21:45 remaining in the second half.
Senior goalkeeper
Margaret Huelin earned the win, making two saves in 70 minutes, 24 seconds, of action. She earned the combined shutout with first-year goalkeeper
Tessa Chomsky, who made her collegiate debut in the second half and played the final 19 minutes, 36 seconds. The Ephs held a 29-4 advantage in shots and a 10-2 lead in shots on goal. Williams took six corner kicks and Westfield attempted one.
The Ephs resume NESCAC competition Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. game at Connecticut College.
