No. 16 Ephs suffer 2-1 loss at No. 7 Wesleyan in NESCAC Quarterfinals

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Senior Anna Miller of the No. 16-ranked and fifth-seeded Williams College field hockey team scored with 2:31 left in regulation Saturday afternoon during a 2-1 setback to No. 7 and fourth-seeded Wesleyan in the NESCAC Quarterfinals at Hicks Field.

All three goals in the game came off penalty corners. The Cardinals (13-3. 7-3 NESCAC) opened the scoring in the 11th minute, as Georgia Adams inserted the ball onto the stick of Brooke Miner who dribbled into the circle and spotted Meera Patel for a one-timer on the left side. During the 46th minute, Adams inserted another corner, and then went to the front of the net and was able to put away a loose ball during a scrum, giving the hosts a two-goal lead.

The Ephs (8-8, 6-4 NESCAC) were able to get within one during the 58th minute, as senior captain Kiki Higgins found Miller with her fifth assist of the season during a penalty corner by junior Laura Ryan. Ryan inserted the ball to senior captain Pilar Torres who attempted a shot that was redirected in the middle of the circle by Higgins, and then Miller was able to guide the ball across the goal line from the right side of the net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ellie Smith made five saves for Williams, while sophomore Sienna Alday recorded two shots off the bench. Wesleyan held a 14-5 advantage in shots, including a 7-2 lead in shots on goal. The Cardinals attempted eight penalty corners and the Ephs were awarded two.
