No. 18 Ephs earn 4-0 win over Vassar in NCAA First Round

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The No. 18-ranked Williams College field hockey team received at least one point from seven different student-athletes Wednesday evening, as the Ephs cruised to a 4-0 triumph against Vassar during the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Williamson Field.

The Ephs (9-8, 6-4 NESCAC) have hosted five NCAA games over the last four years and have gone a perfect 5-0 on Williamson Field. Williams will square off against No. 6 Tufts (15-3, 9-1 NESCAC) Saturday at 2 p.m. during the second round from Bates in Lewiston, Maine.

Senior captain Kiki Higgins tallied two assists during the fourth quarter, as the Ephs scored three goals off penalty corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Ellie Smith earned her sixth shutout of the season against the Brewers (13-7, 5-2 Liberty League).

The Ephs opened the scoring during the 34th minute, as junior Claire Colvin played a penalty corner into Higgins, who quickly slid a pass over to senior captain Pilar Torres and she played a ball into the middle of the circle. Junior Keira Harder fired a shot on net, which was saved by Vassar's goalkeeper Grace Wiley, but senior Anna Miller followed up the rebound and placed the game-winning tally into the right side of the net.

With 1:40 remaining in the third quarter, Williams took a two-goal lead, as Colvin played a penalty corner into Torres and the Madison, New Jersey, native sent a bullet into the net with a screen by Harder.

During the 52nd minute, first-year Katie Sigrist recorded her first collegiate goal, as she one-timed a pass by Higgins into the bottom right corner off a penalty corner by Colvin. Williams ended the scoring with eight seconds remaining when Higgins dribbled around the goalie and played a ball into the middle of the circle that was redirected into the back of the net by junior Laura Ryan.

Williams held a 25-2 lead in shots and 12-0 advantage in shots on goal. The hosts also held a 5-1 lead in penalty corners.
