WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Williams College women's basketball team opened the 2025-26 season on Friday night in Chandler Gymnasium, coming just short of completing an exciting comeback in a 73-69 loss to Skidmore College.
Sophomore Micah Walton led the Ephs with 22 points, including 11 in the final 4:45 of the game, as the Ephs pulled back from a 15-point deficit in the third quarter to get to within three.
The Thoroughbreds were able to hang on late, however, making just enough from the free throw line to stay ahead.
The Ephs trailed by five at the end of the first quarter, but battled back to take the lead late in the second quarter before the visitors pulled ahead by one going into halftime. Skidmore took the momentum back in the third, leading 53-38 with 2:29 left in the quarter, before the Ephs started to gain ground.
Williams got big hoops from Mairi Smith (14 points), Gracie Augustine (13), and Logan Coster (11) in addition to Walton, but the Ephs weren't able to claw back the lead. Smith and Walton each had nine rebounds, and Coster added eight, as well as three assists.
The game was a collegiate debut for first-years Augustine and Amaya Chase-Luthra, who had two points and four rebounds in her first appearance in a Williams uniform.
The Ephs will be off for the rest of the weekend but hit the road early next week for a Tuesday evening clash with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institution at 5pm in Troy.
