Ephs capture OT win against Norwich at home

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Williams College women's ice hockey team earned a dramatic 2-1 victory in overtime against Norwich University on Wednesday night in Lansing Chapman Rink for its first victory of the new season.

Annie Gallagher and Zoe Rosenberg each had a goal and an assist and Reese Luber assisted on both goals as the Ephs scored on the power play just 40 seconds into overtime to win the game.

The game featured another standout performance from reigning NESCAC Player of the Week Erin Pye, who was stellar in net again for the Ephs, making 44 saves. The senior holds a save percentage of .978 through three games, having saved 132 of 135 shots.

While Norwich had more chances in the game, the Ephs were effective in limiting the visitors to low percentage opportunities. Williams also played disciplined hockey, only giving up one penalty in the game, which they easily killed in the first period.

The Cadets did break through in the second period as a blocked shot rebounded out front and was tucked in by Olivia Boyer 6:13 into the session.

Williams fought back, and earned its second power play opportunity of the period just a few minutes later. The Ephs had a pair of shots blocked before Gallagher snapped her game-tying shot past the goalie just as the penalty was about to expire. Rosenberg and Luber both assisted on the goal.

The third period saw more of the same, with neither team able to capitalize on their opportunities, and Williams caught a break late when Norwich was whistled for a penalty with just 21 seconds left in regulation. Pye then made one of her biggest saves of the night on a shorthanded attempt 10 seconds later, and the game headed to overtime.

The extra session was all Williams, using the 4-on-3 advantage to keep pressure on Norwich. It didn't take long to find the winner as Rosenberg tipped home Gallagher's shot to earn the win.

The Ephs are off this weekend, and will take the time to prepare for another non-conference matchup next Tuesday evening at Western New England University. The team will play four straight road games heading into the holiday break, and will return home on January 2 against Lake Forest College.
