WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - First-year
Jackson Krill of the Williams College men's ice hockey team finished with two goals and one assist during a 5-2 victory over Amherst Saturday afternoon in Lansing Chapman Rink.
The Ephs (3-5-0, 3-3-0 NESCAC) also received multi-point efforts from sophomore
Jake McManus (1 goal, 1 assist) and junior
Brady Welsch (1 goal, 1 assist). Sophomore goaltender
Kael DePape earned the win, stopping 33-of-35 shots. Zach Jesse (1 goal, 1 assist) and Oliver Flynn (1 goal, 1 assist) led the charge for the Mammoths (3-4-1, 1-4-0 NESCAC).
"The team played very well all weekend, starting with a tough overtime loss to Hamilton on Friday and finishing with a very strong and full team effort win today against Amherst," said head coach
Bill Kangas. "Our puck pursuit and gap control was very good throughout both games, but today, we were disciplined and in better control of our game, improving each period."
Williams opened the scoring, as first-year
Wilson Farrow played a puck up the boards from deep in the Ephs' defensive zone. Welsch collected and carried the puck through the neutral zone and located Krill who buried a shot into the top-right corner of the net from the right faceoff circle. Krill scored on the power play 1:07 into the second, extending the hosts' advantage to 2-0.
Amherst scored back-to-back goals and evened the score at 2-2 with 18:09 remaining in the third period on a goal by Jesse. McManus made some nifty moves to keep the puck in the Ephs' offensive zone on the edge of the blue line, and then found Welsch who buried the game-winning goal into the top-right corner from the right faceoff circle on the power play at the 5:36 mark of the third.
Senior
Conner Fitzpatrick redirected sophomore
William Yee's shot into the net to push the lead up to 4-2 with 7:50 remaining. Amherst pulled its goalie in the final minutes down by two, as McManus tallied an empty-net tally to seal the victory.
Williams went 2 for 4 on the power play and Amherst was 1 of 4 on the man advantage. The Mammoths attempted 35 shots and the Ephs recorded 34, while each team won 31 faceoffs.
The Ephs will compete at Oswego State on Friday, Jan. 2, at 7 p.m. in Oswego, New York.
