WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. -- This Saturday, the Ephs looked to continue their bright streak of form after placing 4th at the NEWA Championships, competing against some of the best teams in the nation. Today, the Ephs hosted No. 9 SUNY Oneonta, No.13 Ithaca, and long-time NESCAC rival Wesleyan, while also celebrating a massive milestone in their campaign.
Seniors
Thomas Goodwin and
Jack Napeloni were honored for their diligent and admirable service to the Williams Wrestling program as they competed in their final matches in Lasell Gymnasium. Throughout the year, the Williams College wrestlers have consistently stepped up to the challenge, showing heart and determination. After today's meet, the Ephs walked away with wins against Wesleyan and Oneonta but fell short against Ithaca.
The Ephs jumped into action with a dual against Wesleyan University. The Cardinals, riding high after a decisive win over Springfield College, brought a tough and well-drilled squad. However, the Ephs showed no fear. Strong performances from Wesleyan put Williams in an 11-point deficit early on. At 149, junior
Caleb Seyfried secured a critical 9-6 decision victory, putting the Ephs on the board.
Peter Kane followed suit with his usual brilliance, notching six more points for Williams by pinning his opponent in the second period. In the following bouts, both teams scraped together wins, setting up a dramatic final match at 285, with the Ephs trailing by two points.
Thomas Goodwin provided the perfect ending to this gripping dual, securing a victory by fall and propelling Williams to a 22-18 victory.
Next, the Ephs faced SUNY Oneonta ranked 9th nationally and once again proved they can compete with some of the best talent around. First-year
Christopher Colon, senior
Jack Napeloni, and sophomore
Tylor Stubbs ensured Williams took control early, registering 17 points together. In this dual, standout performances came from across the weight classes, and the Ephs earned a dominant 43-9 victory.
In the last dual of the day against 13th ranked Ithaca, the Ephs unfortunately fell short. Despite the result, the Ephs effort and enthusiasm never wavered.
Caleb Seyfried and
Peter Kane once again secured back-to-back wins in the dual at 149 and 157, respectively.
Overall, the Ephs fought hard and should be proud of adding two more wins to an already impressive campaign.
Thomas Goodwin and
Jack Napeloni deserve special recognition today. After serving the Williams Wrestling program impeccably over the years, celebrating their contributions this afternoon was important to the entire team.
After yet another memorable afternoon in Lasell Gymnasium, here's what Eph head coach
Scott Honecker had to say: "What a great day for wrestling on this campus! Our boys competed hard and represented themselves well. This weekend was a good start to the segment of the season where we start sharpening the knife for the postseason. I was really thrilled that
Jack Napeloni and Tommy Goodwin had a good outing and led their team to a couple of wins to make a final memory competing in their home gym."
Looking ahead, the Ephs will travel to Vermont State Castleton University for their final dual meet of the year. Coach Honecker will be eager to build on the impressive record the Ephs have already put together this campaign and use Vermont State Castleton as an opportunity to fine-tune the squad ahead of the rapidly approaching postseason.
