WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. -- Women's lacrosse lost its season opener 10-8 against the St. John Fisher Cardinals. The Ephs fell to 0-1 on the season, while the Cardinals advanced to 3-0. Snow picked up throughout the contest, making the conditions challenging at Farley-Lamb Field.

The Ephs got on the board first, as Claudia Russell forced a foul on the Cardinals' Sydney Carpenter on a drive inside. Russell's free-position shot was good, giving Williams a 1-0 lead four minutes into the game.

The Cardinals struck back with a pair of goals from Emma Biel. First, Biel was fouled and converted her free-position attempt, then she finished across her body into the bottom left corner to give St. John Fisher a 2-1 lead with 8:46 to play in the first period.

The Ephs quickly responded. Reese Willison found Ainsley Abel in the middle, and Abel was fouled. She fired her free position attempt into the top left corner to tie the score at 2-2 with 7:57 to play.

Williams took a 3-2 lead on a Grace Collier goal. Collier slotted a shot into the right corner off of an assist from Russell, as the shot clock was running down.

St. John Fisher tied the game back up with 3:31 left in the period, as Ellie Leisen cut along the edge of the crease and finished a low shot to make it 3-3.

The Cardinals put some distance on Williams towards the end of the second period, going on a 3-0 run in the span of just over two minutes. Two goals from Leisen and one from Hanna Kumpf gave St. John Fisher a 6-3 lead with 2:28 to go in the half.

A beautiful goal from Franny Donohue, on an assist from Collier, drew the Ephs to a 6-4 deficit with 0:28 remaining in the half.

St. John Fisher scored two goals in quick succession to open the second half scoring. Carpenter made a nice move and slotted home a shot into the top left, then Kumpf scored a free-position attempt to make it 8-4, Cardinals, with 8:04 left in the third period.

After another Cardinals goal made it 9-4, Williams closed the third period with momentum. Katy McCullough scored a free-position shot to make it 9-5 with 1:06 left. Then, the Ephs forced a turnover and cleared the ball up field quickly, where Sydney Puntus scored on an assist from Donohue to cut the score to 9-6 with four seconds remaining in the period.

Biel completed her hat-trick to open the fourth quarter scoring, pushing the Cardinals' lead to 10-6.

Goals by Anna Miller and Puntus gave the Ephs some late momentum, with Puntus finishing a shot off of a crisp pass from Russell to make the score 10-8 with 5:11 remaining.

The Cardinals' defense held up strong over the final five minutes, preventing a successful comeback effort and preserving a 10-8 victory.
