Ephs Win on the Road at Mount Saint Mary College in Come From Behind Victory

Newburgh, NY- The Williams College Baseball team came out victorious on the road against Mount Saint Mary College after coming from behind early and shutting out the Knights to end the game.

The Ephs started out shaky, giving up two runs in the first inning, beginning with an RBI by Mount Saint Mary's Di Tulio, which sent Frank Signorelli home, allowing the Knights to strike first. This was followed on the next play when Chris Calvario scored after an error by the Ephs, trying to stop a runner from stealing a second.

Despite being down 2-0, the Ephs were not shaken by this slow start and continued to play hard. In the top of the third inning, after an error by the Knights' second baseman and stolen bases by junior Dave Mosrie and senior Brendan Stannard, put runners on third and second, respectively. With the Ephs in scoring in position, senior James O'Connor hit a single, allowing both Mosrie and Stannard to score after another error by the Knights, tying the game at 2-2.

The Knights fired back quickly with another two runs in the bottom of the third, showing they would not go away quietly. After another hit by Tulio, an RBI double by Tyler Croccito got Tulio home to regain their lead. The Ephs walked the next batter and then gave up a run to Croccitio after an RBI by Stephen Volk, putting the Knights up two.

Without skipping a beat, Williams came firing back with a run by sophomore Ryan Nakajima. Nakajima tripled to start the fourth inning and came home on a sacrifice fly by junior Sasha Palma. Unfortunately for the Ephs, Luke Barone put the Knights back up two after scoring off a single by Reese Kelly.

In the top of the fifth down, 5-3, junior Luca Lopertone stepped up to the plate, ready to make some plays. After being walked, Lopertone stole second and third on a very close play, showing his elusiveness. He scored after the next at-bat off an RBI sing;e by Stannard. Building on the momentum, the Ephs scored again when Stannard came home on a mishandled pitch by the catcher. Rhe Ephs continued to steal bases, with Will Scott taking second and James O'Connor nearly stealing home but being tagged out. However, After a single by Nakajima, lightning struck twice, and Saint Mary's catcher had another passed ball, allowing Scott to get home and give the Ephs the lead at 6-5.

Not to be outdone by Williams's offensive performance, Eph pitchers had quite the day on the mound, not allowing any runs after the fourth inning. Utilizing nine different pitchers, one in each inning, Williams stopped any comeback by the Knights before it began. Some notable performances were by James O'Connor in the 7th and first-year Lucas Asanovic, who came in at the bottom of the ninth to close out the game. They both had two strikeouts and gave up no runs or walks. Issey Gestel also had a productive day, striking out three hitters and only allowing a single run.

Eph head coach Bill Barrale was proud of his guys today for closing out this early part of the season with a W. He called it  " A Great team win." Offensively, he loved the team's continued determination and was happy to follow the game plan of using a pitcher an inning to get the job done.

The Ephs head to Davenport, Florida, this Saturday to begin their spring break trip, where they will take on the College of Wooster at 12:45 pm
