Verkleeren Shatters 400 IM NCAA Record as Ephwomen Stay Strong on Day 2 of NCAA DIII Championships

GREENSBORO, NC—The Ephwomen kept up their momentum on the second full day of the 2025 Division 3 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, finishing the session with fast swims and best times. At the end of the night, the Ephwomen sat in 6th place with 83 points.

The 400 individual medley kicked the evening finals session off with junior Lily Codd competing in the consolation final. With a speedy first half of the race, Codd finished 6th in the heat with a 4:26.85. Then it was the championship final, with Sophia Verkleeren coming in with the top time from the morning heats. Coming off from the 200 IM title, Verkleeren led the pack for the entirety of the race. Surging into the wall on the last 25 of the race, Verkleeren touched with a stunning time of 4:11.23, dropping more than 4 seconds from her morning swim. This is not only a lifetime best time and IM sweep but shatters the NCAA record in the event previously broken by Ephwoman Caroline Wilson in 2012 which was a 4:13.14.

In the morning session, Ruby Groves swam the 100 butterfly. With strong underwater, she finished 31st overall in a new lifetime best time of 56.21.

Carter Roebuck swam the 200 freestyle in the morning session as well. Finishing 27th in a 1:51.75, Roebuck had a strong final 200 free of her sophomore season.

The Ephwomen 200 freestyle relay competed in the morning session as the last event of the swimming trials. Emma Dimter started the relay off in a quick 24.03 followed by Irene Yang with a 23.15. Coming off the 200 freestyle, Carter Roebuck swam the third leg in a 23.61. Bernadette Ramoy swam the anchor leg as her NCAA debut and split a 23.46. The team narrowly missed the consolation finals, finishing 17th in a 1:34.25.

During the afternoon preliminary diving session, captain Adelaide Herman competed on the 1-meter boards. Herman had a stellar Inward 1 1/2 Somersault Pike (403B) scoring 44.40 points which was her highest scoring dive. Herman placed 11th overall with a score of 402.25 qualifying for the consolation final. Just 20 minutes later, Herman completed her 6 optional dives keeping her voluntary score. Scoring higher in 4 out of the 6 dives from her preliminary performance, Herman scored 10 points higher with a final score of 412.75. With a beautiful Inward 1 1/2 Somersault Pike (403B) that scored her almost 50 points, Herman finished 11th, her highest finish in the 1 meter competition ever. Herman will compete again on Saturday, the final day in the 3 meter competition.

"Adelaide Herman gave herself the best present she could for her birthday, which was today," Eph head diving coach Brandon Pearson said. "A lifetime best performance to close out her 1-meter career. Not only did she dive exceptionally well in the preliminary competition, but she then upped the ante and scored 10 points higher in the consolation finals."

Competition continues tomorrow at 10am with the 200 medley relay, 200 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, and the 800 freestyle relay.
