Williams Women’s Lacrosse Holds Off Connecticut College in 10-8 Win

WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. -- On a cold, wet Saturday afternoon in Williamstown, Williams women's lacrosse clung to a hard-fought 10-8 victory over the Connecticut College Camels. The Ephs withstood a small fourth quarter rally from the Camels and were able to pick up their fourth victory in a row. The win propels Williams to 5-3 on the season and 2-2 in the NESCAC, while the loss drops Conn to 6-4 and 1-4 in the NESCAC.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Good passing from Conn led to the first goal of the game, as Campbell Johnston whipped the ball into the middle, where Caroline Bruce slotted it home up high to put the Camels ahead 1-0 with 10:35 to play in the first quarter.

  • Coach Alice Lee called a timeout with 6:21 to play in the first quarter after a slow offensive start for the Ephs. The team immediately scored out of the timeout, with Claudia Russell forcing a foul and converting her free-position shot low to tie the game at 1-1 with 6:01 to go.

  • The Camels quickly responded, as Kate Coughlin scored on a low shot, fading around her defender, to put Conn back in front with 5:00 to play in the first.

  • After a strong stretch of possession for the Ephs, McKenna Dwyer deposited a bouncing free-position attempt into the back of the net to tie the score at 2-2 with 2:15 to play in the first quarter.

  • Russell opened the scoring in the second quarter, forcing a foul on a drive inside and netting her free-position attempt into the upper left to give Williams a 3-2 lead with 13:13 to go in the first half.

  • A scoreless stretch was snapped when a Williams turnover turned into a Conn goal, as Coughlin made a series of moves and slotted her shot into the lower left to make it 3-3 with 6:09 to go in the second quarter.

  • Despite being two players down due to penalties, the Ephs retook the lead. Claudia Russell beat two defenders on a drive to the right side, then eluded another with a nice cut to the middle and scored on a bouncing finish above the stick of Conn goaltender Ava Virga to give Williams a 4-3 advantage with 4:26 to play in the half.

  • Just over a minute later, Sydney Puntus found herself with space behind the goal and got a clean look on the right side, finishing up high to put Williams ahead 5-3.

  • The Camels were able to put together two late goals to tie the game up going into halftime. First, Campbell Johnston freed herself with a nice spin and buried a shot into the bottom right with 46 seconds to play in the half. Then, after a Williams foul with seven seconds left, the Camels executed a good passing play and Johnston scored again, beating the buzzer on a bouncing shot into the upper right corner.

  • Conn continued its momentum to start the third quarter, as Elizabeth Gill scored her tenth goal of the season on a free-position attempt to give the Camels a 6-5 lead with 11:26 remaining in the third.

  • A strong Juliet Kilborn sequence gave Williams the lead again. She netted a beautiful free-position shot into the upper right corner with 10:11 to go in the third, then forced another foul and converted another free-position effort into the lower left side with 6:25 left in the third to make it 7-6, Williams.

  • Kilborn found herself in on another goal with 23 seconds left in the third quarter, as she whipped a pass in the middle to Katy McCullough, who fired a quick one-timer into the back of the net to extend the Williams lead to 8-6.

  • Reece Willison opened the fourth quarter with a nice goal on a low-angled shot to make it 9-6 with 14:20 to play.

  • After Wilison's goal, Conn made a surge to cut the lead to one with plenty of time left to play. Emma Ognibene started the comeback effort with a nice spin move and a low shot outside the reach of Caroline Pratt, making the score 9-7 with 12:53 left in the game. Then, Coughlin got her hat trick with a free-position attempt, going low and right to make it 9-8 with 8:58 remaining.

  • Just when Conn seemed primed to tie the game, Pratt made a critical save on a free-position attempt from Conn's Aine Downey with 4:49 remaining. On the ensuing Ephs possession, Willison was fouled late in the shot clock and fired a screamer into the top left corner to give Williams a 10-8 lead that the team would not relinquish.
