Schenectady, NY – The Williams College Ephs (2-0) hit the road to New York statet o play the Union College Chargers (0-3). It was another back-and-forth game for the Ephs, as they traded goals with Union for much of the game. Coming out for the 3
rd period, however, the Ephs scored 5 consecutive goals through the last two periods to bring this one home by a score of 12-10.
The 1
st period was a fight for the Ephs. Senior goaltender
Matt Wetmore stood strong between the pipes for Williams, as
Gavin Timoney, with goals in back-to-back games now, put Williams on the board first. Despite dropping two goals in the ensuing 10 minutes, Williams took full advantage of the slashing penalty by Union. After getting good o-zone possession and throwing shots on net,
Jesse Shapiro, with a solid ball from
Harrison Cross, found the back of the net to end this quarter at 2-2.
Two and a half minutes into the 2
nd quarter,
Matthew Johnson, with an apple by Ryan Nagel, found his 2
nd of the season and put Williams up 4-2. 30 seconds later, Union scored, and once again, two minutes after that,
Harrison Cross, finding his first of the season, put Williams back ahead. This back-and-forth action continued for the rest of the quarter. Williams would take the lead by one, but Union came right back.
Will Doran and
Ryan Johnson were the two goal scorers towards the end of the quarter, which saw Williams ahead 6-5 going into the second half.
Ian Kim got the third quarter off to the start the Ephs wanted. Williams, with possession in the o-zone, saw Ryan Nagel pick up his 4
th of the season and give Williams a 2-goal lead. The Ephs then went on an absolute tear. From the nine-minute mark in the 3
rd quarter, this Williams team scored 5 straight goals,
Jesse Shapiro from
Tony Provenza, another from Shapiro this time with an apple by
Aidan Housenbold,
Harrison Cross from
Will Doran,
Matthew Johnson once again from Doran, and finally
Jared Stiller gave the Ephs a 6-goal lead with an assist going to
Drew Nicholson.
Union mounted a formidable comeback late in the 4
th quarter, but the Ephs earned themselves plenty of breathing room and battled hard to secure victory. They earned their time to play in front of the home crowd this weekend against Bates College at Farley-Lamb Field and will look to maintain their momentum.
Eph head coach George McCormack had this to say after the game, "Union is always one of the toughest teams on our schedule and tonight was no different. We really stiffened up on defense in the second half and we also had a lot of guys contributing at the offensive end.
Harrison Cross and
Jesse Shapiro really stepped up on offense tonight and Matthew Wetmore had another solid game in the cage."
