Ephs Win First Game of Quarterfinal Series Versus Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine — Behind strong pitching and timely hitting, the Williams College Ephs opened their NESCAC quarterfinal series with a poised 4–1 win over Bowdoin.

The Ephs struck early. In the first inning leadoff man Ben Swank singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by James O'Connor, giving Williams a quick 1–0 advantage. Though Bowdoin starter Jack Bogdanos settled down from there, Williams kept applying pressure.

In the fourth inning, Ryan Nakajima singled to move O'Connor to third, and Will Scott came through with an RBI single to right, extending the Ephs' lead to 2–0.

While the bats gave Williams the edge, the pitching staff held the line. Starter Owen McHugh tossed three scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out three. first-year reliever Grant Greiner earned the win with four solid innings in relief, surrendering just one earned run and striking out four. Closer Lucas Asanovic pitched a clean ninth to earn his fourth save of the season.

The Ephs broke it open in the top of the eighth. After a walk to Marcus Burrell II and a double down the left field line by Henry Juan, his 47th career double, making him the all-time leader at Williams. O'Connor delivered again — this time with a two-run double to left, pushing the lead to 4–0. O'Connor finished with 3 RBIs on the day, continuing his hot stretch at the plate.

Bowdoin responded in the bottom half of the eighth. Henry Bibeau led off with a pinch-hit double and was replaced by Conor Moriarty, who later scored on a single from Kevin Murray, cutting the deficit to 4–1. But Greiner limited the damage and Asanovic shut the door the following inning, earning his fourth save of the season.

Swank and Oliver Rey each had two hits for the Ephs, who totaled nine on the day. Juan also broke the school record for doubles after today's game.

Eph head coach Bill Barrale was thrilled with his team's performance, commenting on his the great pitching and overall performance, saying, "Clean defense and timely hitting… it was a great day".

With this win, the Ephs will look to close the series and win the quarterfinal best-of-three series tomorrow, starting at 10 AM.
