AMHERST, Mass. - First-year
Lucy Carrel scored her first collegiate goal, which stood up as the game-winning tally, for the Williams College women's soccer team in an exhilarating 1-0 triumph at No. 4-ranked Amherst Saturday afternoon on Hitchcock Field.
"It was a hard-fought three points today," said head coach
Sarah Raymond. "Amherst pushed us to the very end, but I am so proud of our team for holding tough. It was a standout performance from Lucy. She was everywhere. It was a really good bounce back from our game last Saturday, but we are only halfway done for the weekend so focus now turns to our home opener Sunday against Skidmore."
The Ephs (2-1, 2-1 NESCAC) have now defeated the Mammoths (3-1, 1-1 NESCAC) in three of the last four meetings, dating back to the 2022 season. The rivalry between the two programs has been tightly contested, as each of the last five matchups have been 1-0 results for the winning team. Williams has gone 6-2-2 in its last 10 games against Amherst, including winning by a score of 4-2 on Cole Field during the 2017 NESCAC Semifinals.
On Saturday, sophomore
Greta Pew registered a team save in the ninth minute, serving as the last line of defense and stopping a shot by Brooke Ingemi going toward the left side of the net. During the 22nd minute, junior
Bria Abbiati took a throw-in from Pew and eluded a Mammoths' defender, and then blasted a shot on the right attacking side of the 18 yard box, causing Amherst's goalkeeper Lulu Fickes to deflect the attempt out of bounds for a corner kick.
Sophomore
Elizabeth Stophel showcased great footwork on the right side of the box during the 23rd minute, and then lined a cross right across the middle of the box, with Carrel running down the left side and kicking the ball into the back of the net. Stophel scored the Ephs' game-winning tally in a 2-0 season-opening victory at Hamilton on Sept. 2.
Senior goalkeeper
Margaret Huelin made six saves in net for the visitors, collecting her second shutout of 2025. Abbiati put three of her four shot attempts on net, while the Ephs held a 17-15 advantage in shots over the Mammoths.
Williams will be back in action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. non-conference matchup against Skidmore on Cole Field in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
