Men’s Cross Country puts in strong showing at Purple Valley Classic

Malcolm Oakes was the fourth Ephs runner across the line on Saturday.

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Williams College men's cross-country team battled fierce competition in Saturday's Purple Valley Classic at Mt. Greylock Regional School, finishing second in a tight top three schools.

The Ephs had a team score of 41, just behind Tufts (36) and ahead of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (43).

Sophomore Eli Welch was the top finisher for the Ephs in second overall with a time of 24:43 in the 8k race, just in front of teammate Nikhil DeNatale, who ran 24:55 for fourth place.

Luke Zanuck finished 10th overall in 25:13, and Malcolm Oakes (25:20) and Rick Yanashita (25:22) finished 12th and 13th. Ryan Hardiman (26:03) and first-year TJ Zwall (26:04) finished out the Ephs' top seven in 26th and 27th overall.

It was the only home race of the season for the Ephs, who had a total of 20 student-athletes cross the line, joined at the event by a large number of alumni and families.

Williams will be off next weekend before traveling to Keene State on Saturday, October 4, in the team's next competition.
