No. 5 Field Hockey falls short, 1-0, in overtime against No. 13 Bowdoin

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Sophomore goalkeeper Ellie Smith of the No. 5-ranked Williams College field hockey team made a season-high 10 saves Sunday afternoon during a 1-0 overtime setback to No. 13 Bowdoin on Williamson Field.

During the 69th minute, Ella Davies was awarded a penalty corner for the Polar Bears (6-2, 3-2 NESCAC) on the left attacking side. She played ball onto the stick of Emily Ferguson at the top, and then Ferguson slid a pass to Clara Noyes. Noyes turned in the middle of the circle and buried the game-winning tally into the bottom left corner of the net.

Senior captain Pilar Torres recorded a team-high three shots on goal for the Ephs (6-2, 4-1 NESCAC), as she had two attempts off penalty corners by junior Haley McAuslin in the final minute of the first quarter but Bowdoin's goalkeeper Lauren O'Donald made two big stops.

Smith made a couple of impressive saves in the opening quarter, as she turned aside a shot by Ferguson in the eighth minute with Mackay Bommer lurking on the doorstep. Smith turned aside a quality attempt by Bommer in the 13th minute.

The Ephs increased the pressure in the fourth, as they had seven shots and five penalty quarters in the quarter. The Polar Bears were able to keep the hosts off the scoreboard, as O'Donald made three saves in the quarter.

Williams held a 22-19 lead in total shots, while the Polar Bears held an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal and recorded a total of 11 shots in the overtime session. Williams was awarded 15 penalty corners and Bowdoin attempted four of its five in the extra period.

The Ephs will be back in action against No. 7 Bates Saturday at 11 a.m. in Lewiston, Maine.
