Ephs earn three crucial NESCAC points with 4-2 win over Colby

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Senior Connor Berg and first-year Jackson Krill finished with two-point efforts, respectively, for the Williams College men's ice hockey team during a 4-2 NESCAC victory over Colby Friday evening at Lansing Chapman Rink.

Junior goaltender Harrison Fogel made 30 saves for the Ephs (5-9-2, 4-6-0 NESCAC), improving to 2-2-1 on the season, while sophomore forward Jake McManus recorded two assists. Wyatt Schmidek tallied one goal and one assist for the Mules (8-6-2, 4-5-1 NESCAC), while goalie Cooper Rautenstrauch made 44 stops.

The Ephs opened the scoring with 59 seconds remaining in the opening period, as sophomore Grant Fuchsen buried a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle off a cross-ice pass by McManus. The visitors evened the score at 1-1 on an even-strength goal 3:33 into the second period by Dan Juzych.

During a 4-on-4 situation, senior captain David Vieten won a faceoff from the right dot in the offensive zone, and then went to the front of the net and tipped a shot by Berg (1 goal, 1 assist) into the top right corner of the net, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead with 13:53 left in the second. First-year Jack Kennedy slid a pass over to Krill (1 goal, 1 assist), who one-timed a shot into the right side of the goal on the power play, putting Williams in front, 3-1, with 12:34 on the scoreboard in the middle period.

Schmidek trimmed Williams' advantage to 3-2 with a short-handed goal at the 11:49 mark of the second period. Berg ended the scoring with an insurance goal 5:11 into the third period, as he netted a shot from the left faceoff circle during a power-play situation.

The Ephs went 2 for 5 on the power play and killed off all three Colby opportunities on the advantage. Williams held a 48-32 lead in shots on goal and won 35-of-57 faceoffs. Vieten went 8-3 in the faceoff circle.

The Ephs compete against No. 12-ranked Bowdoin Saturday at 3 p.m. in Lansing Chapman Rink.
