Margaux Molyneux and Katelyn Wu Advance to Final Round in B Draw at NEWITT

The Williams College women's tennis team won nine matches Saturday

AMHERST/NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — Sophomore Katelyn Wu went 4-0 and senior captain Margaux Molyneux compiled a 3-1 record Saturday, as the two outstanding student-athletes advanced in the quarterfinal and semifinal portions of the B Draw bracket during Day 2 action at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) on the campus of Amherst and Smith College.

"We had a great day today," said 10th-year head coach Anik Cepeda. "Everyone competed hard and made adjustments in their matches. I am proud of the group and excited for tomorrow."

During the quarterfinal round of the B Draw, the Ephs won all three of the matches. In singles, Wu defeated first-year Lauren Oliver of Middlebury, 6-1, 6-4, while Molyneux outlasted first-year Cayna Ghaly of Amherst, 6-0, 6-2. Molyneux and Wu teamed up for a 6-2 triumph against Oliver and Ghaly in doubles competition.

Wu outlasted junior Anselma Petrie of MIT, 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 in singles during the semifinal round, while Wu and Molyneux defeated first-year Michelle Ge and senior Nishi Gandra of MIT, 6-4, in doubles. Williams won 2-of-3 semifinal-round matches and as a result will advance to the final round Sunday at Smith.

Williams will square off against Wellesley in the finals, as Wu and Molyneux will compete in singles against juniors Sophie Buttorff and Nandini Patel, respectively. There will also be a doubles match between the two colleges.

In other action Saturday, sophomore Ayanna Varma and first-year Katherine Kendall each won a singles and doubles match. Varma defeated sophomore Diya Pachamuthu of Middlebury in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, while Kendall emerged victorious against first-year Caitlin Chan of Middlebury, 6-2, 7-5. Varma and Kendall combined for a 6-1 doubles victory over sophomore Sophia Yang and first-year Claire Zhou of MIT. Senior captain Ahn Lin also posted a singles victory, winning, 6-2, 6-3, against sophomore Ellie Lake of Skidmore.
