MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Junior forward
Alex Bethencourt found the back of the net during the 24th minute, as the seventh-ranked Williams College men's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie at Wesleyan Saturday afternoon on Jackson Field.
"It was a great NESCAC game where both teams left everything on the field,"Â said sixth-year head coach
Steffen Siebert. "I am very proud of the performance and the effort of the team. I am looking forward to being back on Cole Field next week."
The Ephs (9-1-2, 5-1-2 NESCAC) struck first with 21:24 left in the first half, as junior midfielder
Luca Ruta played an outstanding through ball down the middle of the field. Bethencourt was the recipient of the pass and fired a left-footed strike into the bottom right corner of the net from the edge of the 18-yard box.
During the 63rd minute, Bethencourt placed a free kick from about 25 yards out into the box, and then junior defender
Chase Caires' left-footed shot from right in front of the net was denied by Wesleyan's goalkeeper Simon Rebstock.
The Cardinals (6-3-3, 2-3-2 NESCAC) evened the game at 1-1 during the 74th minute. John Senn-McNally played a ball into the box that was headed by Will Short, and then Felipe Una buried a turnaround shot.
Williams held advantages of 11-10 and 9-4 in total shots and shots on goal, respectively, while also leading in corner kicks, 5-4. Bethencourt led all student-athletes with three shots on target.
During the 2024 season, fourth-seeded Williams and fifth-seeded Wesleyan met during the NESCAC Quarterfinals on Cole Field, as the Ephs persevered in a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime victory. From 2012-22, Williams went on an 11-game undefeated streak against Wesleyan, compiling a 7-0-4 record during that span.
The Ephs compete against No. 23 Tufts Saturday, Oct. 24, at 1:30 p.m. on Cole Field.
