MEDFORD, Mass. — The No. 6-ranked and fourth-seeded Williams College field hockey team held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 against No. 1 and top-seeded Tufts Saturday, but the Jumbos scored a pair of late goals to secure a 3-2 overtime victory on Ounjian Field.
"That was a heartbreaker, there is no way around it," said 27th-year head coach
Alix Barrale '93. "We dominated for most of the game, but give the credit to Tufts, which found a way to tie it up with a minute left.
Ellie Smith had a great game in the net."
The Jumbos (17-0, 10-0 NESCAC) will square off against No. 2 and second-seeded Middlebury (15-2, 9-1 NESCAC) in the NESCAC Final Sunday at noon in Medford. The Panthers defeated No. 4 and third-seeded Bowdoin (13-4, 7-3 NESCAC), 2-0, during the other semifinal-round matchup Saturday.
During the sixth minute, the Ephs (11-6, 6-4 NESCAC) found their way onto the scoreboard. Senior
Keira Harder located
Claire Colvin inside the circle, and then the senior fired a shot that was blocked. Sophomore
Katie Sigrist gathered the ball and scored a backhand shot off the second-chance opportunity into the right side of the goal.
One minute into the second half, Claire Casey buried a shot for Tufts to even the game at 1-1. With 2:31 remaining in the third quarter, first-year
Hannah Herlihy found the back of the net from the top of the circle off a left-side penalty corner by Colvin.
With one minute, 11 seconds remaining in the fourth, Katarina Villa scored for the hosts to force overtime. Eleanor Helm came through with the game-winning tally during the 68th minute in the first overtime period.
Tufts led in total shots, 21-18, and held a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Ephs attempted seven penalty corners and the Jumbos were awarded six. Smith turned aside seven shots for Williams.
The Ephs will stay tuned for the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Selection Show Sunday at 9 p.m.
