WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Expectations are always high for the Williams College men's tennis team and that will stay consistent during the 2026 season.
Since head coach
Dan Greenberg '08 took over the program in 2009, the Ephs have reached three NCAA Division III Final Fours, including winning the national championship in 2013. Williams has advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals or better seven times and 14 Ephs have earned All-American honors at least once.
The unit begins its 2026 journey with a home match against Springfield on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 10:30 a.m., and then NESCAC competition starts with a 10 a.m. match against Wesleyan on Saturday, March 7, in Middletown, Connecticut.
"We are excited for the spring season," said Greenberg. "With our new facility (Multipurpose Recreation Center) opening in January, the team has been able to build a great foundation. They have gotten in a lot more high-quality training, which should make a difference physically and mentally when we play many top teams this spring. We are looking forward to hosting some awesome matches, going to California for 10 days and, as always, hoping to make a push toward the postseason. Especially with a deep team, with 10 guys who can all contribute, seniors through first years, it should be a fun run."
The 2026 team, which has seven returning student-athletes and three newcomers, will be led by senior captains
Nicholas Chen and
Simon Volkema, while
Andrew Dorr returns for his fourth year as an assistant coach. Junior
Leon Liu, sophomores
Robert Cooper Jr.,
Carter Fayard,
Jack Ling and
Diego Marin and first-years
Anthony Lim,
William Luke and
Matthew Yang round out the roster.
Chen garnered Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American honors in doubles during 2024 and singles during 2025. In 2024 and 2025, Chen was named to the All-NESCAC First Team in doubles, while Volkema earned a spot on the Second Team in singles during 2025. Chen competed at the No. 1 singles slot last spring, going 9-5 at the top spot, while Volkema compiled a tremendous 10-3 mark in singles action.
During his rookie season, Cooper Jr. went 2-2 in singles and won four doubles matches, while Fayard won in singles action during the Skidmore Invitational. During his first season, Ling finished 14-7 in singles and Marin won seven singles events and six doubles matches. Liu emerged victorious in seven singles matches and a handful of doubles events.
The Ephs are scheduled to compete in 15 spring matches during 2026, including traveling to Amherst on Sunday, April 19, for a noon showdown. Williams will host five home matches and also travels out to California from March 23-28 where it will compete against Chapman, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Pomona-Pitzer and University of Redlands.
