No. 9 Ephs complete sweep with 3-2 win over Bowdoin

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Senior goaltender Erin Pye made a game-high 39 saves and seven different Ephs tallied one point for the No. 9-ranked Williams College women's ice hockey team during a 3-2 victory over Bowdoin Saturday afternoon at Lansing Chapman Rink.

The Ephs (16-3-5, 9-3-4 NESCAC) guaranteed themselves either the second or third seed in the NESCAC Tournament and will host a first-round playoff game on Saturday, Feb. 28, with the opponent and time to be announced Sunday.

Late in the first period, sophomore forward Zoe Rosenberg flew into the offensive zone and her shot from the right faceoff circle was deflected. Senior forward Leah Rubinshteyn established position on the left edge of the crease and was able to guide the puck across the goal line for a 1-0 advantage with 2:53 on the scoreboard.

Sophomore forward Charlotte Fetherston gained control of the puck in the Ephs' defensive zone, and then proceeded to cruise through the neutral zone and her shot from the right faceoff circle found the back of the net to give the Ephs a 2-0 lead with 5:24 remaining in the second.

Bella Mele scored for the Polar Bears (11-12-0, 5-11-0 NESCAC) at the 1:31 mark of the third, trimming Williams' lead to 2-1.

Rosenberg won an offensive zone faceoff to senior defender Claire Murphy at the right point. Murphy passed to first-year forward Savana Littlewood, who found sophomore forward Annie Gallagher deep in the zone. Gallagher made a decisive move and flicked a backhand shot over the goalie for the game-winning tally on the power play with 8:23 on the clock.

Luna Lu scored a short-handed goal with 4:25 left for Bowdoin, once again cutting the deficit down to one, but the Ephs were able to secure the victory with 13 saves in the third by Pye.

The Ephs killed off all eight Bowdoin power plays and went 1 for 6 on the advantage. Murphy finished with a team-leading six shots on goal.
