Ephs finish 1-1 at Pomona-Pitzer Saturday

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior Sidney Miller went a combined 3-of-5 batting, with two runs and one RBI, for the Williams College softball team during a doubleheader split at Pomona-Pitzer Saturday afternoon on Wig Beach Field.

The Ephs (4-8) won Game 1, 9-0, in five innings, and then fell to the Sagehens (10-15, 3-3 SCIAC), 1-0, in nine innings during the second game.

Senior captain and starting pitcher Sadie Leonard earned the complete-game victory in Game 1, giving up no runs and only three hits, while striking out 10 and walking no batters in five innings of work. Miller finished 2-for-3 batting, with two runs and one RBI, while junior Katie Blanch went 2-for-4 batting, with three RBIs, two runs and one double. Williams finished with 11 hits and not a single error.

First-year Miya Fujimoto led off the top of the first with a double through the left side, and then scored two at-bats later on a one-run double up the middle by Blanch. Williams added on five more runs in the fourth inning, as the rally included a two-run double by first-year Haley Barrett and an RBI single by Miller. The Ephs extended their lead to 9-0 in the fifth, with Blanch connecting on an RBI single down the right-field line and first-year Annabella Rychetsky tallying a one-run single through the right side.

During Game 2, neither team was able to score through the first eight innings, but Marie Milton recorded the game-winning RBI on a sacrifice fly to center in the bottom of the ninth, allowing Claire Sefkow to cross home with the winning run for the hosts. Miller and sophomore Dani Jackman each recorded one double in the second game.

The Ephs compete against University of La Verne Monday in a doubleheader, with game times set for noon and 2 p.m. Pacific Time in La Verne, California.
