PHILADELPHIA, Penn. - First-year Dylan Scott earned a big with for Williams as the Ephs' men's squash team opened up the Potter Cup - the top flight at the CSA National Team Championships - with an 8-1 loss to #5 Yale University.
The Ephs, ranked 12 in the country coming into the final event of the season, will take on #9 Dartmouth College on Friday at 10:30am in the team's next match.
Williams had qualified for the Potter Cup thanks to a dramatic 6-3 victory over MIT on February 20, when the Ephs were ranked #13 and MIT one spot ahead. The win flipped the two teams in the rankings and moved Williams into the top bracket and the opportunity to play the best teams in the country.
Thursday's match, the opener in the Potter Cup for both teams, was going to be a tall order for the Ephs, facing a Yale team that was ranked fifth and beat #2 Penn earlier in the season.
All nine matches on Thursday finished with a 3-0 score, with eight of the wins going in favor of the Bulldogs. At #7, however, Dylan Scott was able to jump on top of his opponent early, winning the first game 11-5, and then stayed in control and prevented a comeback, winning 12-10 in the second game and 13-11 in the third.
Friday's match against Dartmouth will be a rematch of a February 11 match that took place in Hanover, which the Big Green won 7-2. The Ephs and Dartmouth faced each other in the Potter Cup last year, also a 7-2 victory for the Ivy League school, but Williams did beat the Big Green earlier in the 2024-25 season, a 5-4 win at home in the Simon Squash Center.
