MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Williams jumped out to an early lead, but a big fifth inning from Wesleyan shifted the momentum as the Ephs dropped the NESCAC series opener, 13–5, on Friday afternoon.
With the loss, Williams drops to 6-13 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
The Ephs struck first in the second inning, taking advantage of a pair of Wesleyan errors. Quinn Carlesimo reached on an error to bring home Ryan Nakajima, and Anthony Lods followed later in the inning, reaching on another error that allowed Carlesimo to score and make it 2–0.
Williams extended its lead in the fourth when Dave Mosrie laced an RBI double to left field, scoring Will Scott to give the Ephs a 3–0 advantage.
Wesleyan began to respond in the bottom half of the inning, plating one on an RBI single from Jonah Timmons before adding another run on a Williams error to cut the deficit to 3–2.
The game turned in the fifth, as the Cardinals erupted for seven runs to take control. William Moore delivered a go-ahead two-run single, and Wesleyan continued to pile on with RBI doubles from James Marsden and Oliver Kwan, along with a two-run single by Kato Mangum to extend the lead to 9–3.
Williams answered with two runs in the sixth, as Mosrie picked up his second RBI of the game with a single to left, and Hank Jacobus followed with an RBI double to cut the lead to 9–5.
Wesleyan, however, added four more runs in the seventh, taking advantage of wild pitches and to put the game out of reach.
Mosrie led the Ephs at the plate with two hits and two RBIs, while Jacobus added two hits and an RBI double of his own.
Williams will look to bounce back as they return home on Saturday and continue their three-game NESCAC series beginning at 1pm.
