WORCESTER, Mass. - The No. 4-ranked Williams College men's crew team competed at the New England Rowing Championship on Lake Quinsigamond Saturday, as the first varsity eight boat brought home a bronze medal during a day of racing that featured heats and finals.
In the morning, the Williams' first, second and third varsity eights raced heats and qualified for grand finals, while the the fourth varsity eight went straight to the final round. The third varsity eight placed third in its heat of five crews, the second varsity eight won its heat of four and the first varsity eight placed second in its heat of five.
In the afternoon, the fourth varsity eight raced the grand final to kick things off for Williams. Lined up against Bates, Coast Guard, Colby, Trinity, Tufts and Wesleyan, the Ephs placed fourth. Wesleyan won, and the finish order was as follows: Wesleyan (6:43.416), Trinity (6:51.122), Tufts (6:58.104), Williams (7:02.686), Colby (7:03.230), Bates (7:13.352) and Coast Guard (7:51.037).
Next was the third varsity eight grand final, where Williams raced Bates, Colby, Trinity, Tufts and Wesleyan, rowing to a strong fourth-place finish. Tufts won the event, and the finish order was Tufts (6:09.193), Trinity (6:11.965), Wesleyan (6:14.413), Williams (6:17.321), Colby (6:27.781) and Bates (6:30.201).
Following was the second varsity eight grand final, which featured Colby, MIT, Trinity, Tufts and Wesleyan in addition to the Ephs. In a tight race from start to finish, Williams placed fourth. Trinity won, and the finish order was Trinity (6:07.279), Tufts (6:08.309), Wesleyan (6:09.929), Williams (6:10.737), MIT (6:17.631) and Colby (6:22.165).
The last race of the day for the Ephs was the first varsity eight grand final. Lined up against Colby, MIT, Trinity, Tufts and Wesleyan, Williams fought hard and earned a bronze medal with a third-place finish. Trinity won the event, and the finish order was Trinity (5:49.483), Wesleyan (5:51.765), Williams (5:52.277), MIT (5:53.743), Tufts (5:55.091) and Colby (6:08.121).
The Ephs will be back in action during the National Invitational Rowing Championship/NESCAC Championship on Sunday, May 10, at Lake Quinsigamond.
