Ephs sweep Amherst in doubleheader

AMHERST, Mass. - The Williams College softball team came back from seventh-inning deficits to earn a pair of NESCAC wins Saturday afternoon on the road at Amherst, as the Ephs won the first game, 10-3, in nine innings, and posted a 6-4 triumph in seven innings during Game 2.

During the first-game victory, head coach Kris Herman earned her 900th collegiate win. The Ephs (22-14, 11-5 NESCAC) were led offensively in Game 1 by senior Sidney Miller (2 for 5, 3 RBIs, 1 homer, 1 run) and junior Justine Dunaway (2 of 3, 3 RBIs, 1 double, 1 run).

Junior relief pitcher Natalie Carter worked the final four innings, earned her third win of the season and did not give up a single run and only one hit. She retired the side in order during the sixth inning immediately after entering the game.

Brooke Wild (2 for 3, 1 RBI, 1 walk) reached base three times for the Mammoths (11-25, 5-13 NESCAC), while Lauren Ro finished 2 of 5 in the batter's box, with one run.

A sacrifice fly to center field by Dunaway in the second allowed first-year Haley Barrett to cross home with the first run. First-year Miya Fujimoto extended the Ephs' lead to 2-0 in the third, leading off with a walk, stealing second and scoring on a wild pitch.

Amherst responded in the fifth with a three-run inning to take a 3-2 advantage. The rally was highlighted by a two-run double to center by Lulu Leppard and a one-run infield single by Wild. First-year Ayane Rokugawa evened the score at 3-3 in the seventh for Williams.

Williams erupted with seven runs in the ninth, as Dunaway's one-out, two-run double to left stood up as the game-winning hit. Miller also blasted a three-run homer to center, while junior Emily Borrazzo and sophomore Aleks Albert tallied an RBI double and single, respectively.

During the second game, first-year Annabella Rychetsky led the way for the Ephs offensively and defensively. She pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and did not give up any runs, hits or walks, while striking out two and earning her first collegiate win. The Chicago, Illinois, native went 2-of-2 batting, with three RBIs and one double, while connecting on the game-winning, two-run single with two outs in the seventh.

Senior captain Alysa DeQuiroz (2 for 4, 1 double, 1 RBI, 1 run), junior Katie Blanch (2 for 4, 1 RBI, 1 run) and sophomore Aprill Medrano (2 for 3, 1 walk) played well for the visitors. Williams claimed a 9-4 advantage in hits and did not commit a single error. Abby Moravek led the way for the Mammoths, finishing 2 for 4 in the batter's box, with three RBIs, one homer, one double and one run.

Amherst held a 4-1 lead after five innings, as the Ephs' run came off a two-out, RBI single up the middle by Borrazzo in the fourth, scoring Blanch from third.

Williams scored the final five runs. Rychetsky tallied a one-run double to right with two down in the sixth, and then DeQuiroz recorded a one-run double to left-center with no outs in the seventh, trimming the deficit down to 4-3. Blanch's RBI single up the middle scored DeQuiroz from third and tied the game, setting the stage for Rychetsky's heroics.

The Ephs compete against No. 11-ranked Tufts Sunday during a doubleheader, with game times set for noon and 2 p.m. in Medford, Massachusetts.
