Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s lacrosse scores late to win 6-5 in NCAA tournament

MIDDLETOWN, Ct. - A goal with 11 seconds left from Gavin Timoney gave the Williams College men's lacrosse team a 6-5 win over St. John Fisher to advance to the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament. The Ephs advance to take on Wesleyan University on Sunday at 3pm.

In what had been a close game throughout, the Ephs took control of the ball with under a minute left after a missed shot from St. John Fisher, cleared the ball upfield and called timeout. After possessing for 15 seconds, Timoney received a pass and drove to his right, and despite a double-team, shot through traffic and scored low to the far side. Fisher won the ensuing faceoff but could not get a shot off and the game ended in favor of the Ephs.

The game had started in Williams' favor, with the Ephs scoring the first three goals of the game. Just over 90 seconds in, Ryan Nagle opened the scoring off an assist from Cade Schuckman, followed by unassisted goals from Aidan Housenbold and Schuckman. St. John Fisher pulled a goal back in a man-up situation near the end of the first quarter.

The Cardinals scored twice in 40 seconds early in the second quarter to tie the game, but Will Doran gave the Ephs the lead back late in the first half, taking a pass from Schuckman to put the game at 4-3 in favor of the Ephs at the break.

A late penalty just before the half gave Williams an advantage going into the third quarter, and Ryan Johnson took a pass from Doran to score just 12 seconds into the second half to put the Ephs up 5-3. After that, however, the Cardinals defense held Williams at bay, and St. John Fisher scored twice in the third quarter to tie the game at 5. From 8:33 left in the third quarter until Timoney's goal with 11 seconds left - 23:22 of game time - neither team scored.

In a game where defense dominated and both teams' goalies were outstanding, Charlie Medd gave the Ephs critical saves throughout. He ended with 17 saves on the day - his second-most in any game this season - against just five goals, which was a season low.

The Ephs advance to take on Wesleyan University on Sunday, after the hosts won easily 19-4 over Ohio Wesleyan in Saturday's first game. The opening faceoff will be at 3pm.
