GENEVA, N.Y. - The Williams College women's lacrosse team earned a big 18-3 win over Grove City College in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon in a game played at William Smith College. The Ephs were in control throughout, going ahead 5-0 after the first quarter and holding an 11-1 lead at the half, and advance to take on the host school on Sunday at 1pm.
Ella Ryan was Williams' leading scorer on Saturday, with three goals, while four teammates, Franny Donohue, Paige Nelson, Katy McCullough, and Liv Kim each had two goals. Seven additional players scored once: Bridget Lesch, Allison Lee, Sydney Puntus, Reece Willison, Anna Miller, McKenna Dwyer, and Ainsley Abel. Charlotte Cote and Savoy McMahon split time in goal, each playing 30 minutes in the win.
The Ephs came out firing, with McCullough scoring unassisted less than a minute into the game, with Willison scoring 90 seconds later off an assist from Donohue. After nearly 10 minutes of game time without a goal, Donohue broke out and scored her 50th goal of the season. Williams then used two man-up situations to add two more goals at the end of the first quarter, first from Puntus and then Donohue again.
In the second quarter, McCullough and Ryan each scored before Grove City got its first goal, and then Nelson scored her first of the game with 6:07 left in the half. Anna Miller then scored her first of the season before Nelson and Lee finished off the half with goals.
Ella Ryan scored to open the third quarter, and after Grove City's second goal, Abel and Dwyer both scored to give the Ephs a 14-2 lead going into the fourth quarter. Liv Kim scored on either side of Ella Ryan's third goal, and after a Grove City goal, Bridget Lesch scored her first of the season with 1:18 remaining to put the finishing touches on the 18-3 victory.
The win gives the Ephs a 10-7 record going into tomorrow's test against William Smith.
