NCAA Run Concludes with Second-Round Loss to No. 11 Bowdoin

No. 22 Williams was unable to tame the Polar Bears at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — After defeating New Paltz in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament yesterday, 4-0, the 22nd-ranked Williams College Ephs suffered that same fate at the hands of No. 11 Bowdoin College on Saturday afternoon at MIT's J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble. The loss left Williams with a 12-9 record for the season, while the Polar Bears improved to 14-7 and advances to face host MIT at noon on Sunday.

The match began with Bowdoin winning the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2, though senior Mia Thomann and first-year Ayanna Varma were engaged in close match at No. 3, trailing just 5-4, when the Polar Bears secured the point.

The first singles match to conclude was at No. 3 with Isabella Hartung defeating junior Julia Zhang, 6-3, 6-1. Zoe Sun then won at No. 4, 6-3, 6-2, over senior Jane Ladaga, followed shortly thereafter by Cara Hung with the same score against Thomann at No. 1. Varma had lost the first set at No. 2 but was rallying in the second with a 4-1 lead when Hung clinched the match for Bowdoin.
