WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Williams men's football sent a strong crowd at Farley-Lamb Field home happy with a decisive 17-7 victory over the Bowdoin Polar Bears (0-1, 0-1 NESCAC) in the team's season opener. A stifling defensive performance paved the way for the Ephs (1-0, 1-0 NESCAC) as they controlled the game from start to finish.

Both teams brought defensive firepower early on with neither team gaining a first down on the first three possessions of the game.

Williams started its second drive on Bowdoin's 40 after a 16-yard punt return from Jackson Pfister. On the drive's second play, senior quarterback Owen Johansen found senior Brady Stahelski wide open on a corner route to pick up 28 yards. Two plays later, Johansen kept it himself on a read option from five yards out, squeezing through traffic to score the Ephs' first touchdown of the season with 7:46 still to play in the first quarter for an early 7-0 lead.

The early momentum continued on the next Bowdoin drive. After the Polar Bears moved to midfield, quarterback Soren Hummel's short pass was anticipated perfectly by first-year cornerback Finn Ryan, who jumped in front of receiver Ryan Babka to make his first career interception.

The second quarter featured even stingier defense. Bowdoin was forced to punt, and then the Ephs started to drive downfield, as first-year running back Jack Fabian — who ran for 106 yards in his collegiate debut — found room to run on a series of short gains. On a 2nd-and-12 play from midfield, however, Johansen's throw was picked off by Steven Vargo.

Bowdoin was able to cross midfield on the ensuing drive, but an 11-yard sack by sophomore safety Connor Acheson led to another punt. When Williams fumbled the ball right back to the Polar Bears on its first play, Bowdoin had a golden opportunity with the ball at the Ephs' 22 with a little under two minutes left in the half. 

The defense seemed to relish the challenge as sophomore Sean Rooney blitzed Hummel and hit him as he released a 3rd-and-11 pass. The contact caused Hummel's pass to flutter in the air, and senior Wyatt Cotton snagged the interception at the 2-yard line. From there, Williams was able to run out the clock and take a 7-0 lead into halftime.

Neither team did much offensive damage in the first half as each side managed a mere 63 yards, but the Ephs' defense was especially stout, forcing two turnovers and holding Bowdoin to under two yards per play. The Polar Bears could only muster -2 rushing yards in the first half, and finished with just 12 rushing yards on the day. 

"The defense played really well all day," Coach Mark Raymond said. "We tackled well, forced some turnovers, and gave our offense a lot of possessions."

The third quarter began in similar fashion toe the first half with the defenses dominating. Even when Williams moved into Bowdoin territory on its second drive, Johansen had a pass batted into the air and intercepted by the Zach Taylor.

On the very next play, the Williams defense returned the favor. Bowdoin's Sean Ramos took a run up the middle, and senior lineman Will Baker punched the ball out before Ramos hit the ground, with senior Holden Gering diving onto it to reclaim possession for the Ephs. 

Williams capitalized on the turnover, starting with a 10-yard Johansen run up the middle. Fabiano then burst up the left side and stiff-armed a defender en route to a 25-yard gain. The drive stalled out inside the 2-yard line, but Mauiolo nailed a 20-yard field goal to make it 10-0 with 4:54 left in the third quarter.

Bowdoin threatened to dent the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, driving down to the Ephs' 27, thanks primarily to a 27-yard connection between Hummel and Jake Wang. But the Polar Bears were forced into a 47-yard goal attempt, and the snap was bobbled by the holder, who could only muster a short pass that harmlessly fell to the turf while being chased down by a wall of Ephs.]

On the third play of the next Williams drive, Johansen took the snap and scrambled up the middle, breaking a tackle and scampering towards the right sideline. He was not tracked down for 48 yards, but he was injured on an awkward-looking tackle that forced him from the game.

Senior Owen McHugh, who missed the 2025 season with an injury after serving as the starter the year prior, took over at quarterback with his team in the red zone. On his second play of the day, he dropped back and lofted a high ball off his back foot under pressure, just out of the reach of a Bowdoin defender and into the waiting arms of Daven Bailey for a 14-yard touchdown and an insurmountable 17-0 lead.

"Credit to [McHugh], being prepared to come in during that situation," Raymond said. "The team has all the confidence in him in the world, and he made a great play."

The Polar Bears spoiled the shutout in the final minutes, marching 65 yards in six plays, capped by a Hummel 27-yard toss to Babka over the middle for a touchdown with 36 seconds remaining. The desperation onside kick that followed was covered up by Cotton, and one kneel-down later, the game was complete.

Fabiano's 106 yards on the ground came on just 16 carries (6.6-yard average), while Johansen added 49 rushing yards and his touchdown, to with 79 passing yards by connecting on 8-of-18 tosses.

On defense, Rooney and Acheson each had seven tackles and a sack to lead the way. And for the special teams, Maiuolo had a strong afternoon, averaging 46.6 yards per punt and helping the Ephs control the field position battle all day.

Hummel finished his day 20-of-42 for 190 yards with the one touchdown and two interceptions.

The Ephs will look to build on the win next week in their first road game of the season, against Colby (0-1, 0-1 NESCAC), which fell to Trinity today, 34-14. The game kicks off at the Mules' Seaverns Field at 1 p.m.
