WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — It was a moment that first-year
Nick Appleton of the Williams College men's soccer team will cherish for the rest of his life, as the midfielder buried his first collegiate goal with 57 seconds left in regulation during a 1-0 win over Amherst Saturday afternoon on Cole Field.
The scoring sequence began with a clearing header in the Ephs' defensive 18-yard box by sophomore
Jake Farmer off a Mammoths' corner kick from the left attacking side.Sophomore forward
JJ Ruehlemann one-touched the clear out of the air and onto the feet of Appleton just below the midfield line. The Bethesda, Maryland, native raced down the field with a 2-on-1 opportunity, and then blasted the game-winning goal from the edge of the box off the right post and into the back of the net.
"Two great teams faced each other today in a back-and-forth game with plenty opportunities for either one to score," said sixth-year head coach
Steffen Siebert. "I could not be prouder of the resilience of the team, winning yet another second half. We are looking forward to the next one back on Cole in a few days."
Junior goalkeeper
Kai Darrell made four saves, earned his second shutout of the season and improved to 5-1-1 for the Ephs (5-1-1, 4-1-1 NESCAC). He is now 9-2-3 in his collegiate career and has compiled five shutouts.
The Ephs have gone 2-0-1 in their last three meetings with the Mammoths (2-3-1, 0-3-1 NESCAC), as the two programs played to a 0-0Â tie in Amherst, Massachusetts, during the 2025 season. Williams defeated visiting and then-No. 1-ranked Amherst, 1-0, on Sept. 14, 2024, marking the first time the Ephs defeated the Mammoths on Cole Field since 2005.
The Mammoths held a 19-9 advantage in shots, while the Ephs led in shots on goal, 5-4. Amherst attempted nine corner kicks and Williams was awarded three.
The Ephs compete against University of Hartford Tuesday at 4 p.m. on Cole Field.
