In 2015, he was the Head Coach of the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs in the New York Collegiate Baseball League. The team was comprised of college players from 15 different institutions throughout the country. The Chiefs advanced to the Eastern Division Championship Series.

Colbert began his undergraduate coursework at SUNY Cortland, where he was a two-year member of the varsity baseball program. He later transferred to Ithaca College, where he pitched for the Bombers’ team that won the 2013 New York Regional Championship and appeared in the NCAA Division III College World Series. At Ithaca, Colbert made 15 appearances out of the Bombers’ bullpen, amassing 23 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings of work.
