WILLIAMSTOWN, MA- Williams women's soccer is a perfect ten- that
is, they have a perfect 10-0 season record. The Ephs
dominated conference visitor Bates this afternoon on Cole Field,
delivering a knockout 6-0 shutout performance. With four
games left on the regular season schedule, Williams is still
undefeated and is playing their best soccer at the perfect time.
Scoring a season high six goals, Williams appeared unstoppable
on offense and gave the Bobcats very few looks at goal. Bates
managed only one shot on goal in each half, while Williams rattled
off a staggering twenty-six shots on goal with ten coming in the
first period and sixteen in the second.
"We focused a lot of time and energy in practice this week on
moving the ball well and taking care of the ball, "said Williams
head coach Michelyne Pinard. "It just all came together for
us today."
Both teams opened the game playing well, and while Williams had
many chances on goal in the opening minutes they could not
capitalize. Finally almost thirty minutes into the match up
the Ephs got on the scoreboard off an impressive sequence of passes
between Gabrielle Woodson and Sarah Walmsley.
Woodson had possession of the ball about ten feet in front of
the net with a Bates defender standing between her and the
goalkeeper. She dished the ball to Walmsley who was waiting
outside undefended on the far right post. Walmsley drew out
Woodson's defender before chipping the ball back to her teammate
who turned to find the back of the net and give the Ephs the 1-0
lead.
Walmsley, starting in place of injured senior captain Ana Sani,
finished the day with an assist and a goal. Woodson scored
her fourth consecutive game-winning goal, and now leads with team
with seven goals after this afternoon's two goal outing.
Heading into the second half only up 1-0, the Ephs came out
firing after halftime. Walmsley scored just three minutes
into the second period, while Woodson tallied her second goal less
than ten minutes into the second half to extend the Ephs' lead to
three goals.
Three Ephs scored their first goals of the season today.
Christine Jones, Sara Wild, and Hannah Radcliffe all contributed to
the Ephs' offensive explosion in the second period, and Pinard was
extremely proud of the entire team's effort, commenting "Every
person on the field executed well, and I am really proud of that
fact. I think we are a team that is 25 deep which is really
important."
Williams will host Colby tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. at Cole Field
